Khatmal Treatment Guide: Proven Steps for Stress-Free Sleep
By Pest Tech TeamPublished 6 min readBed Bugs

Khatmal (bed bugs) are one of the most stressful pests a family can face. They bite at night, hide in the smallest cracks, and survive most market sprays. This khatmal treatment guide explains how to confirm what you have, where bed bugs hide in Karachi homes, how professional treatment works and what you can do to make it succeed.
Identify khatmal first
Many bites blamed on khatmal turn out to be mosquitoes, fleas or skin reactions. Before treatment, look for these signs:
- The bugs themselves. Adults are flat, oval and reddish-brown, about the size of an apple seed. Young ones (nymphs) are smaller and paler.
- Dark spots. Small black or brown dots on mattress seams, bed frames and walls — these are droppings.
- Blood spots on sheets and pillowcases.
- Shed skins — pale, empty shells in seams and cracks.
- A sweet, musty smell in heavy infestations.
- Bites in lines or clusters, often on arms, neck and legs, noticed on waking.
A torch and a credit card are all you need: slide the card along mattress seams and bed joints, and check what comes out.
Where khatmal hide in Karachi flats
Bed bugs stay close to where people sleep or sit for long periods. In Karachi homes we find them most often in:
| Hiding place | Why they choose it |
|---|---|
| Mattress seams and piping | Close to the sleeper, protected edges |
| Wooden bed frames and joints | Cracks and screw holes |
| Headboards fixed to walls | Gaps behind the board |
| Sofa and diwan seams | Where people nap or sit for hours |
| Charpai (woven cot) joints | Rope and wood give many hiding spots |
| Electrical sockets and switchboards | Warm, dark gaps near beds |
| Curtain folds and pelmets | Undisturbed fabric |
| Cracks in walls and skirting | Especially in older flats |
In apartment blocks, khatmal also move between flats through shared walls, pipe shafts and wiring conduits. If neighbours have them too, ask your building union to arrange treatment for the affected flats in the same week.

Khatmal treatment guide: why it takes two visits
Bed bug eggs are protected by a shell that most treatments cannot penetrate. That is why a single visit almost never works:
- First visit. The technician inspects every sleeping and sitting area, then treats mattresses, bed frames, sofas, cracks, skirting, sockets and curtain areas. Adult bugs and nymphs exposed to the treatment die.
- The gap. Over the next one to two weeks, eggs laid before the treatment hatch.
- Second visit. Around 10–14 days later, the technician treats again to catch the newly hatched nymphs before they are old enough to lay eggs.
Heavy infestations sometimes need a third visit. Skipping the second visit is the most common reason khatmal "come back".
Professional treatments combine a residual insecticide in cracks and seams with products that disrupt the bug's development, and in some cases steam. You can see how our technicians approach it on the bed bug treatment service page and the list of bed bug chemicals we use.
How to prepare for treatment
Good preparation makes a big difference to the result:
- Wash bedding, curtains and clothes from affected rooms in hot water and dry them in strong sun or a hot dryer. Store them in sealed bags until after treatment.
- Clear the floor around beds and sofas so the technician can reach skirting and corners.
- Empty bedside drawers and wardrobes near beds; bag the contents.
- Do not move items to other rooms unless they are bagged — you may spread the bugs.
- Vacuum mattresses and seams, then empty the vacuum outside in a sealed bag.
- Do not spray market insecticides before the visit; they can scatter bugs into walls.
Children and pets should stay out of treated rooms until your technician confirms they can return.
What happens on the day of treatment
Knowing what to expect makes the day easier:
- Inspection walk-through. The technician checks each bedroom and sitting area with a torch and confirms the rooms to treat.
- Mattress and furniture treatment. Mattresses are stood on their sides so seams, piping and the underside can be treated. Bed frames are partly dismantled where possible to reach joints.
- Cracks and edges. Skirting, wall cracks, sockets near beds, curtain rails and picture frames are treated.
- Sofas and seating. Seams, cushions and the underside of sofas and diwans are covered.
- Drying time. You stay out of treated rooms until they are dry — usually a few hours. Your technician will confirm when you can return.
- Instructions. You will be told what not to clean, when to vacuum, and the date for the second visit.
Common mistakes that let khatmal survive
- Sleeping in another room straight after treatment — the bugs follow you there.
- Washing treated mattresses or wiping bed frames too early, which removes the residual.
- Throwing infested furniture onto the street unwrapped, spreading bugs to neighbours.
- Using market sprays between the two visits.
- Skipping or delaying the second visit.
Do I need to throw away my mattress?
Usually no. Most mattresses can be treated successfully. A mattress may be worth replacing only if it is badly torn, heavily infested inside the fabric, or very old. If you do buy a new one, fit a zip-up encasement and wait until after the second visit — otherwise surviving bugs will move straight in.
After-care: keeping them gone
- Keep checking mattress seams with a torch every few days for a month.
- Fit mattress and pillow encasements.
- Reduce clutter under and around beds.
- Check luggage after travel and inspect second-hand furniture before bringing it home.
- Tell your technician immediately if you see live bugs after the second visit.
The US EPA explains why bed bugs need an integrated pest management approach — combining inspection, non-chemical steps and targeted treatment rather than spraying alone.
Estimate and book
For a rough idea of cost for your flat or house, use our pest control cost calculator and choose bed bugs. The price is confirmed after inspection because the number of rooms affected changes the work. If you also have termite problems in the same home, our Karachi pest control guide explains how to plan treatments together.

Frequently asked questions
Kitne visit lagte hain? (How many visits are needed?)
Usually two, about 10–14 days apart, so that eggs which hatch after the first visit are treated before they mature. Heavy infestations may need a third.
Do I have to throw away my mattress?
Usually not. Most mattresses can be treated. Replace one only if it is badly torn or heavily infested inside, and fit an encasement after the second visit.
Is khatmal treatment safe for children?
Yes, when products are applied per label into seams and cracks. Keep children out of treated rooms until the technician confirms it is safe to return, and wash bedding before use.
Why do bed bugs come back after spraying?
Usually because eggs survived and there was no second visit, or because market sprays scattered the bugs into walls. Proper treatment covers every hiding place twice.
