Khatmal (Bed Bug) Treatment in Karachi
Pest Tech has provided khatmal treatment in Karachi since 2005 with a two-visit bed bug protocol: steam on mattresses and furniture, a residual treatment in every crack where khatmal hide, then a second visit 10–14 days later to catch newly hatched nymphs. Re-treatment within the warranty period is free.
Signs you have a bed bug problem
Khatmal (bed bugs) are hard to spot because they hide in seams and joints and feed at night. In Karachi they move quickly between flats, hostels and guest rooms, so the earlier you recognise the signs, the smaller the treatment.
- Itchy bites in lines or clusters on arms, neck or legs, usually noticed in the morning
- Small rust-coloured or black spots on bed sheets and mattress seams
- Tiny pale eggs and shed skins inside mattress piping, headboard joints and sofa cushions
- A sweet, musty smell in heavily infested bedrooms
- Live bugs the size of an apple seed in bed frame screws, charpai joints or cracks near the bed
- Bites that started after guests stayed, a trip, or buying second-hand furniture
Our bed bug treatment process
- 01
Free inspection
We check mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, sofa seams, curtains, skirting boards and electrical outlets, and we ask about neighbouring flats — khatmal travel through wall voids and plumbing.
- 02
Plan and preparation list
You receive a room-by-room plan and a simple prep list: which bedding to wash on a hot cycle, what to bag, and which furniture to pull away from the wall.
- 03
Visit 1 — steam and residual treatment
Dry steam at high temperature is applied to mattress seams and upholstered furniture to kill bugs and eggs on contact. A non-staining residual insecticide then goes into bed frames, joints, cracks and skirting where steam cannot reach.
- 04
Aftercare
You sleep in your own bed after re-entry — that matters, because hungry khatmal come out, cross the treated surfaces and die. We advise mattress encasements to trap any survivors.
- 05
Visit 2 — follow-up in 10–14 days
Bed bug eggs are protected from most treatments, so a second visit hits the nymphs that hatch after the first. If activity remains, a further cycle is included in your warranty.
Why khatmal need two visits (and why sprays from the market fail)
Bed bugs lay eggs in protected cracks, and those eggs survive most insecticides. A single spray — especially a market aerosol — kills some adults, scatters the rest into new rooms, and leaves the eggs to hatch a week later. That is why so many Karachi families say "khatmal came back".
Our protocol is built around the life cycle:
| Stage | What we use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Adults and nymphs in fabric | Dry steam on seams and cushions | Kills on contact without soaking the mattress |
| Adults in wood and cracks | Residual insecticide (for example a pyrethroid plus neonicotinoid such as imidacloprid) | Keeps working for weeks as bugs cross it |
| Eggs hatching later | Second visit after 10–14 days | Reaches the nymphs before they can lay eggs |
Every product is used per its label and applied into joints and crevices, not sprayed over pillows or bedding.
Bed bugs in Karachi flats, hostels and guest rooms
Apartment blocks in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Johar and Bahadurabad are where we see the most repeat infestations, because khatmal walk through shared walls, electrical conduits and plumbing chases. If the flat next door is infested, treating only your unit is a short-term fix. We can coordinate building-wide treatment with the union or landlord and schedule adjoining flats on the same day.
Hostels, guest houses and hotels are treated room by room with a log of which rooms were done and when, so you can show guests and inspectors a clean record.
What helps between visits
- Wash bedding and curtains on the hottest setting the fabric allows, then dry fully in the sun or a dryer.
- Vacuum mattress seams and empty the vacuum into a sealed bag outside.
- Do not move to another room to sleep — the bugs follow you and spread.
- Do not throw furniture on the street; it spreads khatmal to the next home. Ask us first.
Pests covered
- Common bed bug (Cimex lectularius)
- Tropical bed bug (Cimex hemipterus)
- Bat bugs in roof spaces
Safety for children, pets and food areas
- Steam uses only water; residual products go into cracks, joints and frames — never onto pillows, sheets or baby cots.
- Children, pets and anyone pregnant stay out of treated rooms until surfaces are completely dry; your technician confirms the re-entry time on the day.
- Air the bedroom before sleeping and make the bed with freshly washed linen.
- Our formulations are non-staining on fabric and wood when applied as directed.
- Product names and safety data sheets are available on request.

Bed Bug (Khatmal) Treatment: frequently asked questions
Usually not. Steam and residual treatment can clear a mattress; encasing it afterwards traps any survivors. We will tell you honestly after inspection if a piece of furniture is too damaged to save.
Two: the main treatment and a follow-up 10–14 days later for nymphs that hatch from eggs. Heavy infestations may need a third cycle, which is covered by the warranty.
Until the treated surfaces are dry — your technician confirms the exact time. Air the room before sleeping in it.
Yes. They travel through wall voids, plumbing and electrical conduits. If neighbours are affected, we recommend treating connecting units on the same day.
Yes, when applied as directed. Residual products go into cracks and frames, not onto bedding, and rooms are only re-used once dry.
Hot washing and full drying kill bed bugs and eggs in fabric, which is why it is on our prep list. It does not reach the bugs hiding in the bed frame and walls.
If they return within the warranty period on your job card, we retreat at no extra charge.
