Why DHA homes have their own pest problems

DHA is mostly bungalows and low-rise apartment buildings close to the sea, and that combination shapes the pests we treat:

• Sea humidity keeps wooden window frames, doors, wardrobes and kitchen cabinets damp for much of the year — ideal for subterranean and drywood termites.
• Large gardens and planters built against the house give termites and ants a hidden route up to the plinth.
• Servant quarters, basements and stores are often the first place cockroaches and rodents settle, then spread into the main house.
• Old drain lines in the earlier phases let American cockroaches come up through floor traps and gully drains, especially after rain.
• Trees along lanes and boundary walls give roof rats a bridge onto roofs and into false ceilings and AC ducts.

Newer apartment buildings in Phase 6, 7 and 8 have fewer structural gaps but see German cockroaches and khatmal moving between flats through shared shafts.

If you are renovating or rebuilding, schedule pre-construction termite treatment with your contractor before the new floors are poured — it is far more complete than drilling afterwards.
