Wood Borer Treatment in Karachi (Ghun ka Ilaj)

Pest Tech has provided wood borer treatment in Karachi since 2005 for furniture, doors, wooden ceilings and flooring. We inject a wood-treatment product into the exit holes and galleries, treat exposed surfaces so larvae inside the timber are reached, and advise on sealing and humidity — stopping the fine ghun powder at its source.

Signs you have a wood borer problem

Wood borers (ghun) are beetle larvae that tunnel inside timber for months or years before adults emerge. The damage is often confused with termites, but the signs are different — and so is the treatment.

  • Small round exit holes (pin-head to about 3 mm) in furniture, doors or frames
  • Fine, flour-like powder (frass) on the floor below wooden items
  • Fresh powder appearing again after you clean it — a sign of active larvae
  • Crumbling edges or weakened legs on chairs and beds
  • Small beetles found near windows or lights in spring and summer
  • Damage concentrated in older, imported or second-hand furniture

Our wood borer treatment process

  1. 01

    Free inspection

We confirm whether the damage is wood borer or termite, check which items are active (fresh powder) and whether the wood is still structurally sound.

  2. 02

    Plan

You get a list of items to treat, which ones may need replacement, and the preparation needed — for example removing polish or emptying cupboards.

  3. 03

    Injection treatment

A wood-treatment product is injected into exit holes and galleries so it spreads through the tunnels where larvae feed.

  4. 04

    Surface treatment

Bare and unpolished surfaces — backs of wardrobes, undersides of beds, inside drawers — are brushed or sprayed so the product soaks into the wood.

  5. 05

    Aftercare and recheck

Holes are filled once treatment has soaked in. Because larvae are deep inside, we recheck for fresh powder in the following weeks.

Wood borer vs termite

Both damage wood, but they live differently, so treating one as the other wastes money.

If you see mud tubes or soil, it is termites — see termite control.

For wood we use borate-based treatments or other wood-treatment products applied per label. Borates penetrate the timber and remain in it, protecting against re-infestation, and have low toxicity for people and pets when used as directed.

Protecting furniture in Karachi’s humidity

Many wood borers prefer damp wood, and coastal humidity in DHA, Clifton and Defence View keeps wooden furniture moist for much of the year. To prevent new infestation:

  • Keep furniture a few centimetres away from damp walls and ensure airflow behind wardrobes.
  • Polish or seal bare wood — beetles lay eggs on unfinished surfaces and in cracks.
  • Inspect second-hand and imported furniture before bringing it in; treat it if there is fresh powder.
  • Keep an eye on items stored in basements, stores and servant quarters.

Treating furniture while you are moving house — when items are empty and accessible — is the easiest time. See also termite signs in furniture and wood borer vs termite.

Wood Borer Treatment: frequently asked questions

Wood borers leave neat round holes and fine powder. Termites leave mud tubes, soil in cracks and hollow-sounding wood.

Usually yes, if the wood is still strong. We advise replacing items where the structure is too weak to be safe.

Polish helps prevent egg laying on the surface, but it does not kill larvae already inside. Active items need injection treatment first.

Larvae feed inside wood all year; adult beetles usually emerge in the warmer months, when new holes and powder appear.

Yes. Emerging beetles lay eggs on nearby untreated wood, so treat active items promptly.
