"How often should we get pest control done?" is one of the questions we hear most. The honest answer is that it depends on the property, the pests and the season — a restaurant kitchen needs far more attention than a top-floor flat. This guide explains how often should you do pest control for homes, restaurants, offices and warehouses, gives a Karachi seasonal calendar, and lists the signs that mean you should not wait for the next scheduled visit.

Homes

For most Karachi homes, a general treatment every three to four months keeps cockroaches, ants and other common pests under control. The warm, humid climate means pests are active for most of the year, so waiting a year between treatments usually lets populations rebuild.

Adjust the schedule if:

  • You live on the ground floor or near a market or nala — pressure is higher, so treat more often.
  • You have had a heavy infestation — treat more often until it is under control.
  • You live in an apartment block — coordinate with neighbours and the building's schedule.
  • You are moving in — treat before furniture arrives, when every corner is easy to reach.

Termites are different: after treatment, an annual inspection is usually enough, unless you see new signs. Our guide to termite signs in furniture explains what to look for.

Restaurants and food businesses

Food businesses have food, water, heat and waste every day — ideal conditions for cockroaches, flies and rodents. Monthly professional service is the norm, with:

  • Gel and crack treatment in kitchens.
  • Drain treatment.
  • Rodent station checks.
  • Fly control.
  • A written report for your audit file.

Our restaurant pest control checklist explains what auditors look for.

Offices and schools

Offices with pantries, water dispensers and busy washrooms usually need visits every month or two; small offices can often manage with visits every three months. Schools need child-safe methods and careful timing — during holidays, weekends or after hours. Both benefit from an annual contract with scheduled visits and reports; see our pest control AMC guide.

Warehouses and godowns

Stored goods attract rodents and stored-product insects. Warehouses usually need monthly rodent monitoring and inspection, with sheet or space fumigation when an infestation is found or before dispatch. Our godown fumigation guide covers the process.

Signs you need pest control sooner

Do not wait for your next scheduled visit if you see:

  • Cockroaches during the day — a sign of a large population.
  • Droppings in kitchen drawers or along skirting.
  • Bites on waking, blood spots on sheets or dark specks on mattress seams.
  • Mud tubes on walls or hollow-sounding door frames.
  • Winged termites inside the house.
  • Scratching in the roof or false ceiling at night.
  • Gnawed food packets or wires.
  • A sudden increase in mosquitoes, especially if neighbours have dengue.

Keeping a simple pest log at home

A notebook or phone note makes it much easier to decide when you need treatment. Record:

  • The date of each professional treatment and what was treated.
  • Any pests you see, with the date and room.
  • Changes such as renovations, new furniture or leaks.

After a few months you will see a pattern — for example cockroaches returning about ten weeks after each treatment, or mosquitoes rising every August. Share the log with your technician; it helps them set the right interval for your home instead of a one-size-fits-all schedule. It also shows whether a treatment is lasting as long as it should, which is useful if you ever need to use your warranty.

Is it safe to do pest control this often?

Yes, when treatments are targeted — gel in cracks, drain treatment and residual products applied per label in hidden areas. Regular, targeted treatment usually means less chemical overall than occasional heavy spraying after a problem gets out of hand. Our guide on whether pest control is safe for kids covers preparation and re-entry.

After rain: do I need another treatment?

Indoor treatments — gel, crack treatment and drain treatment — are not washed away by rain. But heavy rain can flood drains, push cockroaches and rats indoors and create mosquito breeding sites. If activity increases after the monsoon, a follow-up visit makes sense.

New house or flat

Treat before you move in. An empty home is the easiest place to treat thoroughly, and you avoid bringing pests in with you. Include a termite inspection for houses and ground-floor flats.

Plan your schedule and budget

For homes, our pest control cost calculator shows a range per treatment and for quarterly plans. For businesses, the commercial fumigation AMC estimator estimates an annual contract by area and visit frequency. For a whole-home treatment, see our general fumigation service.

The National Pesticide Information Center's guide on integrated pest management explains why regular monitoring and prevention reduce the need for chemicals.

Frequently asked questions

Is pest control every 3 months necessary?

For most Karachi homes, a general treatment every three to four months keeps common pests under control, because the climate lets them breed most of the year.

Do I need pest control after rain?

Indoor treatments are not washed away, but heavy rain can drive cockroaches and rats indoors and create mosquito breeding sites. Book a follow-up if activity increases.

Should I do pest control before moving into a new house?

Yes. An empty home is easiest to treat thoroughly, and a termite inspection before moving in is worthwhile for houses and ground-floor flats.

How often do restaurants need pest control?

Monthly professional service is the norm, with callouts for problems and extra visits before audits.
