For traders and warehouse owners, a single infestation can ruin a consignment worth far more than any pest control budget. Stored-product insects breed inside sacks where no spray can reach them. That is why godown fumigation — sealing stock under sheets and treating it with a gas — is the standard method for stored commodities. This guide explains the pests involved, how phosphine sheet fumigation works, why exposure takes days, and the safety steps before anyone goes back in.

Stored-product pests: what attacks your stock

Karachi's warehouses and godowns hold rice, wheat, pulses, spices, dry fruit, animal feed and packaged foods — all targets for stored-product insects. The main groups are:

Pest groupExamplesWhat they damageSigns
WeevilsRice weevil, grain weevilWhole grains — develop inside the kernelSmall holes in grains, fine dust
BeetlesKhapra beetle, red flour beetle, grain borersGrains, flour, pulses, seedsLarvae, shed skins, powder, bad smell
MothsIndian meal moth, rice mothGrain, flour, dry fruit, nutsWebbing on sacks, moths flying at dusk
MitesFlour mitesFlour and processed foodsFine moving dust, musty smell

The khapra beetle is particularly serious for exporters because many importing countries treat it as a quarantine pest.

Godown fumigation with phosphine: how the sheet method works

Phosphine is a gas released from tablets or pellets of aluminium phosphide or magnesium phosphide when they react with moisture in the air. It penetrates sacks and bulk grain, reaching insects at every life stage — including eggs and larvae hidden inside kernels.

A typical sheet fumigation follows these steps:

  1. Inspection. The fumigator checks the stock, the floor, the stack shape and the building. Cracked floors and badly built stacks can leak gas.
  2. Stack preparation. Stacks are arranged with space around them so sheets can be sealed properly.
  3. Covering. Gas-tight fumigation sheets are placed over the stack and down to the floor.
  4. Sealing. Sheet edges are sealed to the floor with sand snakes (long sand-filled tubes) or tape, so gas cannot escape.
  5. Dosing. The fumigant is placed under the sheet at the dose stated on the label for the commodity, volume and temperature.
  6. Warning signs. Signs are posted at every entrance, and the area is restricted.
  7. Exposure. The stack stays sealed for the full exposure period.
  8. Aeration. Sheets are lifted and the space is ventilated.
  9. Clearance. Gas levels are measured with a detector before anyone is allowed back.

Why exposure takes days

Phosphine works slowly. Insects must be exposed to a lethal concentration for long enough, and eggs and pupae are harder to kill than adults. The label sets the minimum exposure time, which depends on temperature — in cooler conditions, longer exposure is needed. Cutting exposure short is the most common reason fumigations fail, and it also encourages insects to become resistant to phosphine.

A typical sheet fumigation keeps stock sealed for several days, followed by aeration. Your fumigator should tell you the planned timings before starting so you can schedule dispatch.

Safety clearance: nobody goes back until it is measured

Phosphine is highly toxic to people and animals. A responsible fumigation includes:

  • Trained, licensed fumigators only. Fumigant tablets must never be handled by untrained staff.
  • Restricted access during exposure, with warning signs in the local language.
  • Neighbour safety — adjoining rooms, offices and living quarters must be checked, especially in mixed-use buildings.
  • Gas monitoring during and after exposure.
  • Clearance certificate only when gas levels are safe.
  • Residue disposal — spent tablet residue is collected and disposed of safely.

Never allow workers to sleep in or near a godown under fumigation.

Is fumigated food safe?

When phosphine is used at label rates and the stock is fully aerated, the gas leaves the commodity; the remaining residue is expected to be within permitted limits. Grain and pulses are routinely fumigated this way before sale and export. The key is correct dosing, correct exposure and full aeration before dispatch.

Records you should keep

Buyers, auditors and insurers increasingly ask for fumigation records. Keep:

  • The date, commodity, quantity and stack or warehouse location.
  • The fumigant used, dose and exposure period.
  • Temperature during exposure.
  • Clearance time and gas readings.
  • The fumigator's name and company.

Prevention between fumigations

  • Clean the godown thoroughly before new stock arrives: sweep spilled grain, remove old sacks and dust.
  • Inspect incoming stock and keep new stock away from older lots until checked.
  • Stack on pallets, away from walls, with inspection space around each stack.
  • Keep doors closed and fit mesh on vents to stop moths entering.
  • Control rodents with a station programme.
  • Monitor with traps and regular sampling.
  • Keep a simple register of each lot's arrival date, source and inspection result, so any infestation can be traced back quickly.

Sheet fumigation vs space fumigation vs spraying

Warehouse owners sometimes ask why their stock cannot simply be sprayed. The methods do different jobs:

MethodReaches insects inside sacks?Typical use
Sheet fumigationYes — gas penetrates sacks and grainInfested or high-value stacks, pre-export stock
Space (whole-building) fumigationYes, if the building can be sealedEmpty or fully sealed warehouses, silos
Surface sprayingNo — only insects on surfacesEmpty godowns before restocking, walls and floors
FoggingNo — only flying insectsMoths flying in the building, between fumigations

In practice, most godowns combine them: spraying the empty building before restocking, sheet fumigation when an infestation is found or before dispatch, and fogging to control moths between treatments.

Industrial areas and warehouse clusters

Warehouses in Korangi Industrial Area and SITE share walls and loading areas, so pests move between neighbouring godowns. Coordinated treatment and good hygiene across a cluster make fumigation last longer.

Our warehouse and godown fumigation service covers sheet fumigation, space treatment and ongoing monitoring. For businesses that want a year-round programme with rodent control and regular inspections, the commercial fumigation AMC estimator gives a first estimate. If your stock is going abroad, read our restaurant pest control checklist for how audit records are organised — the same principles apply to warehouses.

Pakistan's plant protection authority is listed with the International Plant Protection Convention, which publishes its official contact and reporting details — useful if your stock is intended for export.

Frequently asked questions

How many days does godown fumigation take?

Exposure usually takes several days, depending on the product label and temperature, followed by aeration and gas clearance. Your fumigator should give you the timings before starting.

Is fumigated grain safe to eat?

When the fumigant is used at label rates and the stock is fully aerated, the gas leaves the commodity. Grain and pulses are routinely fumigated this way before sale and export.

Why are gas-tight sheets needed?

The fumigant must stay at a lethal concentration for the full exposure period. Leaking sheets let gas escape, the fumigation fails and insects can become resistant.

Can workers stay in the godown during fumigation?

No. Phosphine is highly toxic. Nobody may enter until gas levels have been measured and the area has been cleared.
