Rats and mice (chuhe) are more than a nuisance in Karachi. They contaminate food, chew electrical wiring, damage stored goods and can carry disease. Many families try a few poison packets from the market, see fewer rats for a week, and then find them back. This guide explains chuhe ka ilaj properly: how to confirm what you have, how roof rats and sewer rats differ, how to use bait safely, why sealing matters most, and when to call a professional.

Signs you have rats or mice

You may never see a rat during the day — they are most active at night. Look for these signs instead:

  • Droppings. Rat droppings are dark and roughly the size of a rice grain or larger; mouse droppings are much smaller. Fresh droppings are dark and soft; old ones are grey and crumbly.
  • Gnaw marks on doors, cupboards, food packets, plastic pipes and wires.
  • Runways and rub marks. Rats follow the same routes along walls and leave greasy dark marks where their fur rubs.
  • Noises at night — scratching or running in false ceilings, roofs and walls.
  • Nests of shredded paper, cloth or plastic in store rooms, behind appliances or in roof spaces.
  • Damaged food — torn bags of flour, rice or pet food.
  • A strong smell of urine in enclosed spaces.

Chuhe ka ilaj: know which rodent you are dealing with

Karachi homes and businesses mainly deal with three rodents. Treatment depends on which one you have:

RodentWhere it livesTypical signsKey point for treatment
Roof rat (black rat)Roofs, false ceilings, trees, upper floorsNoises above, droppings in loftsClimbs well — bait and traps go up high, along beams and cable trays
Sewer rat (brown rat / Norway rat)Drains, sewers, ground floors, gardensBurrows, droppings near drainsBurrows and swims — seal drains and ground-level gaps
House mouseKitchens, cupboards, storesSmall droppings, gnawed packetsSmall range — many small placements close together

Roof rats are common in houses with trees near the walls and in markets with connected rooftops. Sewer rats are more common near nalas, markets and older drainage in areas such as Saddar, SITE and Korangi.

Bait stations and safety

Rodent bait (rodenticide) is effective, but it must be used carefully, especially in homes with children and pets.

Use tamper-resistant stations

Never leave loose poison pellets or open packets on the floor. Professionals place bait inside locked, tamper-resistant bait stations: sturdy boxes that rats can enter but children and pets cannot open. Stations are fixed along walls on the routes rats already use.

Place bait where rats travel

Rats are cautious of new objects. Stations work best:

  • Along walls, where rats run.
  • Near signs of activity — droppings, gnaw marks and runways.
  • Away from food preparation areas.
  • High up along beams and cable routes for roof rats.

Be patient

Modern baits usually take a few days to work, which stops rats from linking the bait with feeling ill. You may keep seeing activity for several days after baiting starts.

Traps as an alternative

Snap traps and glue boards are used where poison is not suitable — for example in food stores, kitchens and near pets. Traps must be checked daily. Glue boards should only be used where they can be checked frequently and humanely.

Sealing: the part that stops them coming back

Killing rats without sealing entry points means new rats simply replace them. Sealing (also called rodent proofing) is the permanent part of chuhe ka ilaj:

  1. Gaps under doors. Fit door sweeps or metal strips — a rat can squeeze through a very small gap.
  2. Holes around pipes and cables. Fill with steel wool and cement or sealant; rats can chew through foam alone.
  3. Drains. Fit metal grilles or covers on floor traps and outside drains.
  4. AC and exhaust openings. Cover unused openings with metal mesh.
  5. Roof and ceiling gaps. Seal gaps where cables and pipes enter roof spaces.
  6. Tree branches. Trim branches that touch walls or roofs — roof rats use them as bridges.

Hygiene that removes their reason to stay

  • Store rice, flour, grain and pet food in metal or thick plastic containers with tight lids.
  • Take rubbish out daily and keep bins closed.
  • Clear clutter from store rooms, roofs and servant quarters.
  • Do not leave pet food or bird seed out overnight.
  • Clean up fallen fruit in gardens.

When to call a professional

DIY rat control can work for a single mouse in a kitchen. Call a professional when:

  • You hear rats in the roof or false ceiling.
  • You see droppings in several rooms or fresh gnaw marks on wires.
  • You have small children or pets and cannot place bait safely.
  • Rats keep returning after you have treated.
  • You run a shop, restaurant, office or godown, where rodents can damage stock and fail audits.

Our rodent control service includes inspection, tamper-resistant stations, trapping where needed and advice on proofing. You can see the products we use on the rodent control chemicals page.

Dealing with the smell of a dead rat

Occasionally a rat dies in a wall or ceiling where it cannot be reached. The smell usually fades within a week or two as the body dries out, especially in Karachi's heat. Ventilate the room, and ask your technician about placing stations so that rats are more likely to be found and removed. If you can find the body, wear gloves, bag it and dispose of it, and clean the area with disinfectant.

Rodents and the monsoon

Heavy rain floods sewers and burrows, pushing sewer rats up into homes and ground-floor shops. If you had rodent problems last year, book a treatment and check drain covers before July. Our Karachi pest control guide has a seasonal calendar for planning.

Estimate your cost

For a first idea of cost for your home, use the pest control cost calculator and choose rodents. For shops and warehouses, the price depends on the number of stations and visits, so we quote after inspection.

The US National Pesticide Information Center has an independent guide to rodent control, including bait safety, which is worth reading before using any poison at home.

Frequently asked questions

Is rat poison safe around pets and children?

Only when it is placed inside locked, tamper-resistant bait stations that children and pets cannot open. Never leave loose pellets or open packets on the floor.

What can I do about the smell of a dead rat?

If you cannot reach it, ventilate the room — the smell usually fades within one to two weeks. If you can find it, remove it with gloves, bag it and disinfect the area.

How long does chuhe ka ilaj take?

You may see fewer rats within a week of baiting, but a full programme with sealing and follow-up usually takes a few weeks. Sealing entry points makes the result last.

Do ultrasonic rat repellers work?

Rodents often get used to them quickly. Bait stations, traps and proper sealing are far more reliable.
