Every year the monsoon ends and Karachi relaxes — just as the real dengue risk begins. Dengue season Karachi families need to prepare for runs from September into November, when the rains have left water in thousands of containers across the city. This guide explains why cases peak after the monsoon, what 2025's numbers showed (and what they missed), a practical plan for your home and building, and the warning signs that mean you should see a doctor.

Dengue season Karachi: why cases peak after the monsoon

Dengue is spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which breeds in clean, still water in containers. The monsoon (usually July to September) creates countless breeding sites: water in plant pots, tyres, rooftop junk, coolers, construction pits, blocked roof drains and uncovered tanks.

Aedes eggs are laid just above the water line and can survive dry for months. Each fresh fill of rainwater hatches a new generation. As the adult population grows through August and September, the virus spreads between people, and cases usually climb from September into November. Warm, humid weather after the rains keeps mosquitoes active.

What the 2025 dengue numbers showed

According to figures reported in 2025:

  • The Sindh Health Department officially reported 1,083 confirmed dengue cases for 2025 by late October.
  • Separately, data from Indus Hospital, Liaquat National Hospital and SIDHRC showed 2,972 dengue cases between 1 September and 16 October 2025.
  • Official counts exclude private laboratories, which is one reason hospital figures were higher than the official number over a similar period.
  • By early November 2025, Sindh had recorded 9,638 confirmed cases, including 4,540 in Karachi.

These figures come from different sources, cover different periods and count cases differently, so they should not be compared directly. Together, they show two things clearly: the post-monsoon weeks are the peak of dengue season, and official counts may not capture every case.

Mosquito & Dengue Control

The data gap — and why it matters for you

Because many patients are tested at private labs and treated privately, official numbers can lag behind what doctors and hospitals are seeing. For families, the practical lesson is simple: do not wait for official announcements before acting. If mosquitoes are active and neighbours are falling ill, treat your home and building now.

A home plan for dengue season

Every week from August to November:

  1. Walk your roof, balcony, garden and servant quarters; empty anything holding water.
  2. Scrub the inside of containers you refill (bird baths, pet bowls, vases) — eggs stick to the walls.
  3. Check overhead and underground tank lids and fit mesh on vents and overflows.
  4. Clear roof drains and gutters.
  5. Empty fridge and AC drip trays.

Every day:

  • Use repellent on exposed skin in the daytime, following the label — especially for children.
  • Dress children in long sleeves and trousers.
  • Keep window mesh closed in the early morning and late afternoon.
  • Use bed nets for babies' daytime naps.

A plan for buildings and societies

Aedes flies only a short distance, so a neglected roof in your building can infect the whole block. Management committees should:

  • Assign someone to inspect the roof, water tanks, basements and parking weekly.
  • Clear roof drains and remove junk from rooftops.
  • Arrange professional treatment of common areas, stairwells and basements.
  • Treat water that cannot be removed — drains and construction pits — with larvicide applied by professionals.
  • Coordinate fogging of the compound when cases are reported nearby.
  • Share information with residents without naming families who are ill.

For apartment blocks in areas such as Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Gulistan-e-Johar, one shared plan is far more effective than each flat acting alone.

Is fogging enough?

No. Fogging kills adult mosquitoes that are flying at that moment, which is useful when cases are reported nearby. But it does not kill larvae in water, and new adults emerge within days. Lasting control needs breeding-site removal, larviciding and residual spraying of resting places, with fogging as a supporting tool. Our guide to mosquito fogging vs spraying explains each method.

Professional treatment during dengue season

Our mosquito control service for dengue season includes:

  1. Inspection of your home, roof, tanks and compound for breeding sites.
  2. Larviciding of water that cannot be emptied.
  3. Residual spraying of indoor and outdoor resting places — dark corners, under furniture, behind curtains, shaded walls.
  4. Fogging of gardens, lanes and drains where needed.
  5. Advice for your family and building committee.

When to see a doctor

Pest control prevents bites; it does not treat illness. See a doctor promptly if anyone has a high fever during dengue season, especially with:

  • Severe headache or pain behind the eyes.
  • Muscle and joint pain.
  • Rash.

Seek urgent medical care for warning signs such as severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from the gums or nose, blood in vomit or stool, rapid breathing, or unusual tiredness or restlessness — particularly as the fever falls. Always follow your doctor's advice on tests, fluids and medicines.

Schools, offices and mosques

Aedes mosquitoes bite during the day, when children are at school and adults are at work. Institutions should run the same weekly checks as homes:

PlaceCommon breeding sitesAction
SchoolsRooftop water tanks, flower beds, broken fountains, stored furnitureWeekly roof and grounds check; treatment during holidays or weekends
OfficesBasement parking, AC drip trays, indoor plants, rooftop tanksFacilities team checklist; residual treatment of basements
Mosques and community hallsWudu areas, water drums, rooftop tanksCover drums; scrub containers; keep drains flowing
Construction sitesPits, curing slabs, drums, tyresDrain or treat weekly; remove scrap

A single neglected site in a neighbourhood can keep mosquitoes breeding for weeks, so community places matter as much as homes.

Book early

Demand for mosquito treatment rises sharply once cases are reported. Booking in August, before the peak, gives you a better choice of dates and more time for treatment to work.

Frequently asked questions

Which months are the peak dengue season in Karachi?

Usually September to November, after the monsoon, when rainwater in containers has produced large numbers of Aedes mosquitoes.

Is fogging enough during dengue season?

No. Fogging kills only the adults flying at the time. Breeding-site removal, larviciding and residual spraying give lasting control.

What are the symptoms of dengue?

High fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain and sometimes rash. Seek urgent care for warning signs such as severe abdominal pain, vomiting or bleeding.

Why do official dengue numbers differ from hospital figures?

Official counts in 2025 excluded private laboratories, and different sources covered different periods, so hospital data showed more cases than the official figure.
