Dengue Prevention Karachi: Proven Home Plan Before the Outbreak

Dengue prevention Karachi families can do themselves is more effective than most people think. The mosquito that spreads dengue does not breed in the big nala down the road — it breeds in your flower pots, water tanks, coolers and buckets, and it bites during the day. This guide explains how the Aedes mosquito behaves, what last year's case data showed, a week-by-week breeding checklist, and when professional spraying helps.

Aedes mosquitoes: how the dengue carrier behaves

Dengue is spread mainly by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. It is different from the common nuisance mosquito in several important ways:

FeatureAedes (dengue mosquito)Culex (common night mosquito)
AppearanceBlack with white stripes on legs and bodyPlain brown
When it bitesDaytime — peaks early morning and late afternoonEvening and night
Where it breedsClean, still water in containersDirty water — drains, nalas, sewage
Where it restsIndoors, in dark corners, under furniture, behind curtainsNear drains and outdoors
Flight rangeShort — usually stays close to where it hatchedLonger

Two points matter most for prevention:

  1. Aedes breeds close to where you live. If you find Aedes mosquitoes in your home, the breeding site is probably within your house, roof or immediate neighbourhood.
  2. Aedes bites in the daytime. Bed nets at night help against other mosquitoes, but dengue protection needs daytime measures too, especially for children at home and school.

What the 2025 dengue numbers showed

Dengue in Sindh is seasonal, and the picture from 2025 shows why the post-monsoon months need attention. According to reporting from that season:

  • The Sindh Health Department officially reported 1,083 confirmed cases for 2025 by late October.
  • Data from Indus Hospital, Liaquat National Hospital and SIDHRC showed 2,972 dengue cases from 1 September to 16 October 2025 — and official counts exclude private laboratories, so hospital data captured cases that did not appear in the official figure.
  • By early November 2025, Sindh had recorded 9,638 confirmed cases, including 4,540 in Karachi.

Different sources counted different things over different periods, which is why the figures do not line up neatly. What they agree on is the pattern: cases rise sharply after the monsoon, from September into November, and Karachi carries a large share of the province's cases.

The World Health Organization notes in its dengue fact sheet that there is no specific treatment for dengue and that preventing mosquito bites and controlling the mosquitoes that carry the virus are central to prevention. The WHO Regional Office for Africa similarly describes combating the vector mosquitoes, through environmental management and chemical methods, as the only current method of controlling or preventing transmission.

Dengue prevention Karachi checklist: breeding sites to check

Aedes lays eggs just above the water line on the inside walls of containers. The eggs can survive dry for months and hatch when water returns — which is why scrubbing matters, not just emptying.

Walk through your home once a week with this list:

Roof and outside

  • Overhead water tanks: lids tight, no cracks, mesh on overflow and vent pipes.
  • Roof drains and gutters: clear, not holding water.
  • Old tyres, broken coolers, buckets, paint tins and scrap: remove, cover or turn upside down.
  • Plastic sheets and tarpaulins: arrange so they do not hold pools.

Balcony and garden

  • Plant pots and saucers: empty saucers weekly; use sand in saucers if needed.
  • Bird baths and pet bowls: change water every two to three days and scrub.
  • Ornamental ponds and fountains: keep water moving or treat it.
  • Tree holes and bamboo stumps: fill with sand.

Inside the home

  • Money plants and flowers in water: change the water and scrub the container weekly.
  • Fridge drip trays and AC drip pans: empty and clean.
  • Water storage drums and buckets: cover tightly; scrub the inside when refilling.
  • Bathroom corners: do not leave water standing in buckets.

Underground and ground-level tanks

  • Lids fitted and sealed; access covers not broken.

For more on tanks, our monsoon pest control checklist covers roof drains and seasonal preparation.

Protecting the family from daytime bites

  • Use mosquito repellent on exposed skin during the day, following the label — especially for children going to school, madrassa or tuition.
  • Dress children in long sleeves and trousers during peak dengue months.
  • Fit mesh on windows and doors, and keep them closed in the early morning and late afternoon.
  • Use mosquito coils, mats or plug-in repellents indoors according to their labels, with ventilation.
  • Put bed nets over infants during daytime naps.

When to spray: timing professional treatment

Professional treatment is most useful when it is timed around the mosquito season:

  1. Before and during the monsoon (June–August): remove and treat breeding sites; residual spraying of resting areas indoors and in shaded outdoor spots.
  2. Post-monsoon (September–November): the highest-risk period. Continue residual spraying every few weeks, larvicide water that cannot be removed, and add fogging if cases are reported nearby.
  3. If someone in the family or building has dengue: book treatment promptly so that mosquitoes around the home do not spread the virus to others.

Our guide to mosquito fogging vs spraying explains what each method does. Fogging alone is not enough — it only kills mosquitoes flying at that moment.

Our mosquito control service starts with a breeding-site inspection of your home, roof and compound, then combines larviciding, residual spraying and fogging as needed. For a quick estimate, use the pest control cost calculator and choose mosquitoes.

Buildings and neighbourhoods

Because Aedes flies only short distances, a clean house next to a neglected rooftop can still have mosquitoes. Apartment buildings should:

  • Assign someone to check the roof, water tanks and common areas weekly.
  • Clear roof drains before the monsoon.
  • Coordinate spraying of common areas and stairwells.
  • Share this checklist with every flat.

Neighbourhoods with open plots or construction sites, such as parts of Gulistan-e-Johar, should ask builders to drain or treat water in pits and curing areas.

Know the warning signs

Dengue often starts with high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, and sometimes a rash. Seek medical care promptly if someone has a high fever during dengue season — and urgently if there is severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from the gums or nose, or unusual drowsiness. Pest control prevents bites; it is not medical advice. Always follow your doctor.

Frequently asked questions

When should I book dengue spray for my home in Karachi?

Before and during the monsoon, and especially in the post-monsoon months of September to November when cases usually peak. Book promptly if someone nearby has dengue.

Should mosquito spraying be done indoors?

Yes — Aedes mosquitoes rest indoors, so residual treatment of dark corners, under furniture and behind curtains is important. It is applied per label with the room cleared.

Is dengue spraying safe for children?

When products are applied per label and children stay out of treated rooms until the technician confirms they are dry, yes. Removing breeding sites involves no chemicals at all.

Why do I still get bitten during the day after night-time protection?

The dengue mosquito bites mainly in the daytime, especially early morning and late afternoon. Use repellent, long clothing and window mesh during the day as well.
