Proven Guide to Water Tank Contamination Karachi: Stay Safe
By Pest Tech TeamPublished 6 min readWater Tank Cleaning

Water tank contamination Karachi families live with is rarely visible from the tap. The water may look clear, but the sump under the house and the tank on the roof can hold months of sediment, biofilm and bacteria. This guide explains how big the problem is, why Karachi tanks get dirty so quickly, the warning signs, the health risks and the safe routine that fixes it.
How big is the problem in Karachi?
The Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) has tested Karachi's water repeatedly. In one widely reported study (Dawn), 107 of 118 samples (90.7%) were unsafe to drink; 88.1% contained coliform bacteria and 33.4% showed E. coli, a marker of sewage mixing. PCRWR's Drinking Water Quality in Pakistan 2021 report again rated 93% of the Karachi sources it monitored as unsafe, mainly because of bacteria. Even bottled water is not automatically safe: in its April–June 2026 review, PCRWR found 29 bottled-water brands unsafe out of 230 samples across 20 cities.
Your home tank sits at the end of this chain. If contaminated water goes in and the tank is never cleaned, bacteria have a warm, dark, nutrient-rich place to multiply. You can read PCRWR's work on its official website.
Water tank contamination Karachi: why it builds up so fast
| Source | What it brings in | Where it settles |
|---|---|---|
| KWSC line water after supply gaps | Silt, rust, pipe residue | Underground sump floor |
| Tanker water | Sand, organic matter, unknown source quality | Underground sump |
| Boring (groundwater) | Dissolved salts, iron, hardness | Walls and pipes as scale |
| Open or broken lids | Dust, leaves, lizards, birds, insects | Overhead tanks |
| Sunlight through thin plastic | Algae growth (green water) | Plastic and fibre overhead tanks |
| Cracks and seepage | Ground water, sometimes sewage | Older RCC sumps |
Underground tanks fill first, so they collect the heaviest sludge. Overhead tanks receive pumped water, so less silt reaches them, but rooftop heat, dust and loose lids cause their own problems. In areas that depend heavily on tankers — parts of DHA, Clifton, Scheme 33 and Malir — sediment builds up faster still.

Tanker water: what to check on delivery
Many Karachi homes buy tanker water between line-water supply days, and it is one of the biggest sources of sediment in underground sumps. You cannot test every tanker, but you can reduce the risk:
- Ask where the water comes from and use the same supplier where possible.
- Look at the water in a clean bucket before it goes into the sump — cloudy, smelly or sandy water is a warning.
- Let tanker water settle in the sump for a few hours before pumping it to the roof.
- Keep the sump manhole closed between deliveries so dust and insects stay out.
- Clean tanker-fed sumps every three to four months rather than twice a year.
Warning signs your tank is contaminated
- Water has a smell, a metallic taste or a yellow, brown or green tint
- Grit or slime in taps, shower heads, filters or the geyser
- Filter cartridges clogging faster than usual
- Visible mosquito larvae or insects near the lid (see our guide on water tank mosquito breeding)
- Damp patches or seepage marks around the underground sump
- More than six months since the last cleaning
Health risks of a dirty tank
The World Health Organization's drinking-water fact sheet explains that contaminated drinking water can transmit diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio. Children and elderly family members are most at risk. Boiling or filtering at the tap helps, but it does not remove the sludge and biofilm that keep re-contaminating clean water inside the tank. Cleaning the source is the lasting fix.
The safe fix: professional cleaning and chlorination
Pest Tech follows the sequence described in the WHO technical note on cleaning and disinfecting water storage tanks:
- Inspect the tank, lid, inlet and overflow, and check for cracks.
- Drain or transfer usable water and isolate the pump.
- Remove sludge manually and with a submersible pump.
- Scrub and pressure-wash walls, floor and ceiling to break up biofilm.
- Vacuum out the dirty rinse water.
- Disinfect with a measured chlorine solution (sodium or calcium hypochlorite) and leave it for the full contact time.
- Rinse, refill and check the chlorine residual before the tank goes back into use.
Underground tanks are confined spaces, so only a trained crew with ventilation and safety gear should go inside. Never send a household helper into a sump, and never pour chemicals into a tank by guesswork.

How to tell a tank was cleaned properly
A quick rinse with a hose is not cleaning. After a professional visit you should see:
- No sludge or sand on the floor of the underground tank when the level is low.
- No green film or slime on the walls of the overhead tank.
- A faint chlorine smell for a short while after refilling — not a strong one.
- The lid, vents and overflow checked and closed.
- Clear answers to your questions about how long the chlorine was left and how the residual was checked.
How often to clean
| Situation | Recommended frequency |
|---|---|
| Line-water home, good lids | Every 6 months |
| Tanker-dependent home | Every 3–4 months |
| Apartment building or society tank | Every 3–6 months |
| Restaurants, hospitals, schools | Every 3 months, with records |
| After monsoon flooding or seepage | Immediately |
Flats and apartment buildings
In apartment blocks in areas such as Gulshan-e-Iqbal and North Nazimabad, one underground tank and several rooftop tanks often serve every flat. That means one neglected tank affects every family in the building. Ask your union or management committee when the tanks were last cleaned, who holds the key to the rooftop tanks, and whether lids and vent mesh are in place. A building-wide cleaning, done with notice to residents, is far cheaper per flat than each family buying more filters.
What to do after the monsoon
Heavy rain and street flooding can push dirty water into underground sumps through cracks and loose manhole covers. If water stood around your sump, do not use the tank for drinking water until it has been cleaned and chlorinated. Check the manhole cover seats properly, look for new damp patches on the sump walls, and empty any containers on the roof that collected rainwater — they breed the Aedes mosquito that spreads dengue.
Keeping your tank clean between visits
- Fit tight, lockable lids and mesh on vents and overflows
- Paint or shade plastic tanks to block sunlight
- Let tanker water settle before pumping it up
- Clean the underground and overhead tanks together, so a clean overhead tank isn't refilled from a dirty sump
- Combine tank cleaning with mosquito control during the dengue season

Frequently asked questions
Is Karachi tap water safe to drink straight from the tank?
Not reliably. PCRWR testing has found most Karachi samples bacteriologically unsafe. Clean and chlorinate your tanks every six months, and boil or properly filter drinking water.
How often should I clean my water tank in Karachi?
Every 6 months for most homes, and every 3–4 months if you rely on tanker water or the tank lid is not sealed.
Does chlorine make the water unsafe after cleaning?
No. The tank is rinsed after the contact time and refilled, and the residual is checked so it falls within safe drinking levels.
Should I clean underground and overhead tanks together?
Yes. Otherwise sludge from the underground sump re-contaminates a freshly cleaned overhead tank within days.
