Water Tank Disinfection and Chlorination in Karachi

Pest Tech disinfects and chlorinates water tanks in Karachi after cleaning, after monsoon flooding or seepage, and before a new tank goes into use. A measured chlorine dose is applied for the full contact time, the tank is rinsed and refilled, and the chlorine residual is checked before the water is used.

When a tank needs disinfection

Chlorination is the last step of every tank cleaning, and on its own it is needed when:

  • Flood water or sewage may have entered the tank during the monsoon
  • Seepage was found in an underground sump
  • A new tank is being connected for the first time
  • Someone in the house has had a water-borne illness
  • The tank stood empty or open for a long period
  • Water testing showed bacteria such as coliform or E. coli

How tank chlorination is done

  1. 01

    Clean first

Chlorine works on clean surfaces. A dirty tank is cleaned and desludged before disinfection — see our cleaning service.

  2. 02

    Measure the volume

The tank volume is measured so the chlorine dose matches the water it will treat.

  3. 03

    Apply chlorine

A measured sodium or calcium hypochlorite solution is applied and circulated.

  4. 04

    Contact time

The solution is left for the full contact time so bacteria on the walls and in the water are killed.

  5. 05

Rinse, refill and check the residual

The tank is flushed, refilled and the chlorine residual is checked before use.

Why chlorine, and why the order matters

The World Health Organization's technical note on cleaning and disinfecting storage tanks sets out the sequence: clean the tank (scrub, wash, flush), disinfect it with chlorine, then flush before use. Skipping the cleaning step wastes the chlorine on dirt and leaves bacteria protected inside the biofilm.

The US CDC's safe water storage guidance gives a bleach method for sanitising small household containers. It is for small containers only — tanks you would have to enter must be handled by a trained crew.

After the monsoon

Heavy rain and street flooding can push dirty water into underground sumps through cracks and loose manhole covers. If water stood around your sump, have the tank cleaned and chlorinated before using it again, and combine it with a check for mosquito breeding sites. Low-lying areas such as Saddar and parts of Malir see this most often. Book through the water tank cleaning service, which covers both underground and overhead tanks, and estimate the price with the calculator.

Chlorine safety

  • Chlorine is measured for the volume of water and never added by guesswork.
  • The tank is rinsed after the contact time and the residual is checked before drinking water is used.
  • Chlorine products are never mixed with other chemicals, and are kept away from children.
  • Only our trained crew enters underground tanks, with ventilation and safety gear.

How much does tank disinfection cost in Karachi?

Disinfection is included in every tank cleaning. On its own — for example after flooding or for a new tank — it is quoted per tank after a quick inspection.

Please do not guess the dose or enter the tank. Too little does not disinfect and too much makes the water unpleasant and unsafe; a dirty tank also needs cleaning first.

Yes. New tanks and pipes can carry dust and construction residue, so rinse and disinfect a tank before the first use.
