Cockroaches from Drains: Proven Fixes for Karachi Homes
By Pest Tech TeamPublished 6 min readCockroaches

You switch on the bathroom light at night and a large, reddish-brown cockroach runs back into the floor trap. You spray it, clean the floor, and the next night another one appears. Cockroaches from drains are one of the most common complaints we hear in Karachi, and they will not be solved by kitchen sprays. This guide explains where these cockroaches live, how they get in, and how drain treatment, covers and sealing stop them.
Why cockroaches from drains are a Karachi problem
The large cockroaches that appear from floor traps are American cockroaches. Unlike the small German cockroach that lives in kitchen cabinets, the American cockroach prefers warm, damp, dark places with plenty of organic matter — and Karachi's sewer system offers exactly that.
Several local conditions make the problem worse:
- Old and cracked sewer lines in older neighbourhoods let cockroaches move between buildings.
- Blocked or overflowing drains, especially during the monsoon, push cockroaches up into homes.
- Shared drainage stacks in apartment buildings connect every flat vertically.
- Dry floor traps in rarely used bathrooms lose the water seal that normally blocks the pipe.
- Heat and humidity for most of the year keep sewer populations high.
How they get into your home
| Entry point | Why it works for cockroaches |
|---|---|
| Floor traps (bathroom, kitchen, balcony) | Direct opening to the drain; missing or loose covers |
| Dry traps in guest bathrooms | No water seal to block the pipe |
| Gaps around pipes under sinks | Unsealed holes where pipes pass through walls |
| Cracked drain pipes in walls | Hidden routes from the stack into cabinets |
| Manholes and gutters in the compound | Outdoor access to ground-floor rooms |
| AC and washing machine drain pipes | Loose connections into the drainage system |
Because they live in the drains, these cockroaches mostly appear at night, when they come out to search for food and water, and retreat quickly when lights come on.

Drain treatment: what actually works
Spraying the bathroom floor kills the cockroach you see but does nothing to the hundreds living in the drain below. A proper drain treatment includes:
- Inspection of every floor trap, sink drain and visible pipe, including balconies and servant quarters.
- Cleaning — removing hair, grease and debris from traps, because this organic build-up is food and shelter.
- Drain treatment with a product suited to wet areas, applied into the trap and the first part of the pipe.
- Perimeter treatment around the drain opening and nearby cracks.
- Advice on covers and seals for each entry point.
In buildings, the treatment should also cover the main drainage stack and any manholes in the compound. Our cockroach control service includes drain treatment as standard where American cockroaches are the problem.
Covers and sealing: the permanent part
Treatment reduces the population; physical barriers keep the rest out:
- Fit proper floor trap covers. Covers with small holes or a hinged flap work well. Replace broken or missing ones.
- Keep traps wet. Pour a mug of water into rarely used floor traps every few days so the water seal stays in place.
- Seal pipe gaps. Fill gaps around pipes under sinks and behind toilets with sealant or cement.
- Repair cracked pipes. A plumber can fix leaking or broken drain lines inside walls.
- Close cabinets under sinks. Keep them clean and dry, with no stored rags or cardboard.
Building management: why one flat is not enough
In an apartment building, your drain connects to your neighbours' drains through a shared stack. If only your flat is treated, cockroaches from the rest of the building keep arriving. Buildings get the best results when management:
- Treats the main drainage stacks and manholes at regular intervals.
- Clears blockages quickly, especially before and during the monsoon.
- Asks residents to fit covers and report problems.
- Arranges treatment for all flats on the same schedule.
For bungalows and houses in areas such as DHA Karachi, where compound drains, gutters and servant quarters are common entry points, the outside drainage is as important as the inside.
Monsoon: when drain cockroaches surge
During and after heavy rain, sewer lines fill and overflow. Cockroaches move upwards to escape the water, and many families see a sudden increase in July and August. Treating drains and fitting covers in June, before the rains, prevents most of this. Our Karachi pest control guide includes a seasonal calendar for planning.
A quick drain check you can do tonight
Walk through your home with a torch about an hour after dark:
- Look at every floor trap — bathrooms, kitchen, balcony, laundry area and servant quarters.
- Check whether each one has a cover, and whether the cover fits without gaps.
- Pour a little water into traps in rarely used bathrooms and listen: a dry trap takes the water without any sound of a seal.
- Open cabinets under sinks and look at where pipes enter the wall.
- Note any spot where you see cockroaches, droppings or a musty smell.
Share these notes with your technician. They make the inspection faster and help target treatment to the exact entry points.
Do bleach and phenyl work?
Pouring bleach or phenyl down a drain may kill a few cockroaches it touches and makes the drain smell clean for a while. But it does not reach cockroaches deeper in the pipe, and it breaks down quickly. It is fine for hygiene, but it is not a treatment. Boiling water can crack plastic pipes and is not recommended.
How often should drains be treated?
For most homes, drain treatment as part of a general treatment every three to four months is enough, with an extra visit before the monsoon. Restaurants and food businesses usually need monthly treatment. If you also have small German cockroaches inside kitchen cabinets, read our guide to cockroach control in the kitchen — it needs gel bait as well.
