Cockroach Gel vs Spray: Proven Guide to the Best Method
By Pest Tech TeamPublished 6 min readCockroaches

Ask ten people how to kill cockroaches and most will say "spray". Ask a professional technician and you will hear "gel first". Both have a place, but using them the wrong way round — or on top of each other — is the most common reason cockroach treatments fail in Karachi homes. This guide explains cockroach gel vs spray: how bait works, when spray helps, how to combine them and the mistakes to avoid.
How cockroach gel works: the domino effect
Cockroach gel bait is a paste of food attractant mixed with a slow-acting insecticide. It is placed in small dots — about the size of a lentil — in the cracks and hinges where cockroaches hide.
The process:
- A cockroach finds the gel and eats it.
- Because the active ingredient is slow-acting, it has time to return to its hiding place.
- It dies there, among other cockroaches.
- Other cockroaches feed on its droppings and body (cockroaches do this naturally), and also take in the active ingredient.
- The effect spreads through the group, including young nymphs that rarely come out to feed.
This "domino" or secondary kill is why gel reaches cockroaches you never see — and why it works so well against German cockroaches, which live in large groups inside kitchen cabinets and appliances.
Cockroach gel vs spray: when spray is the better tool
Residual spray leaves a thin layer of insecticide on a surface that kills cockroaches crossing it for some time. It is the right choice for:
- Drains and floor traps, where American cockroaches come up from sewers.
- Entry points — gaps under doors, around pipes and along skirting.
- Perimeters — the outside of the kitchen and the home.
- Areas gel cannot be used, such as wet surfaces and large voids.
- Quick knockdown in heavy infestations, applied in places away from gel.
Our guide to cockroaches from drains explains why spray and drain treatment matter for the large American cockroach.
| Gel bait | Residual spray | |
|---|---|---|
| Best against | German cockroaches (small, kitchen) | American cockroaches (large, drains) |
| Where | Hinges, cracks, behind appliances | Drains, entry points, perimeters |
| Reaches hidden cockroaches? | Yes — through the domino effect | Only those that walk over treated surfaces |
| Smell | Very little | Mild, short-lived |
| Safety around food areas | Placed in cracks, away from surfaces | Kept off food surfaces |
| Speed | Several days to take full effect | Faster knockdown |

Combining gel and spray correctly
The best treatments use both — in different places:
- Gel inside the kitchen: hinges, cabinet corners, behind the fridge, under the sink, around the gas stove and water dispenser.
- Spray outside the gel zone: drains, floor traps, gaps under doors, skirting in other rooms and the external perimeter.
- Drain treatment for American cockroaches.
- Follow-up to place fresh gel for newly hatched nymphs.
Our cockroach control service follows this approach, and you can see the kinds of products we use on the cockroach chemicals page.
Mistakes to avoid
- Spraying over gel. Spray contaminates the bait and cockroaches avoid it. This single mistake ruins more gel treatments than anything else.
- Cleaning gel away. Do not wipe inside hinges and cracks where gel was placed.
- Big blobs instead of small dots. Large amounts dry out faster; many small dots work better.
- Placing gel in the open. It should be in cracks, where cockroaches hide, and out of reach of children and pets.
- Leaving other food out. Crumbs and dirty dishes compete with the bait.
- Using gel in hot, sunny spots where it dries quickly.
- Giving up too early. It is normal to see more cockroaches for a few days as they come out to feed.
- Using the same product forever. Cockroaches can become bait-averse or resistant; professionals rotate products.
Where to place gel: a room-by-room guide
| Area | Placement points |
|---|---|
| Kitchen cabinets | Inside hinges, top corners of cabinet frames, drawer runners |
| Sink area | Where pipes enter the wall, the back corners of the under-sink cabinet |
| Appliances | Behind and under the fridge, around microwave and oven frames, behind the water dispenser |
| Gas stove | Gaps between the stove and counter, behind the stove |
| Bathroom | Around pipe entries, behind the cistern, cracks near the basin |
| Dining area | Gaps in wooden furniture joints, under the table edge |
Small dots in many places work far better than a few large blobs. Place them close to where you have seen cockroaches or their droppings — small black specks along hinges and edges.
Signs the treatment is working
- Dots of gel disappear over the first few days.
- You see more cockroaches briefly, then fewer and fewer.
- Dead or sluggish cockroaches appear in the open, often during the day.
- Droppings stop appearing on freshly cleaned surfaces.
If gel is untouched after several days and cockroaches are still active, tell your technician — the placement or product may need to change.
How long does gel last?
Gel stays attractive for a period that depends on the product, heat and dust. In Karachi's heat, placements can dry out faster. A professional will check and replace gel on the follow-up visit. If all the dots have been eaten, that is a sign the gel is working and needs replacing.
Is cockroach gel safe?
Gel is one of the lowest-exposure ways to treat a kitchen, because it is placed in small amounts inside cracks rather than sprayed across surfaces. Keep children from reaching into hinges and gaps where it has been placed, and follow the technician's advice. Our guide on whether pest control is safe for kids covers preparation and re-entry.
How often should gel treatment be repeated?
For a moderate German cockroach problem, a first treatment plus a follow-up visit usually brings numbers down sharply. After that, regular general treatment every three to four months keeps them under control. Restaurants and food businesses typically need monthly service.
Estimate your cost
Use our pest control cost calculator and choose cockroaches to see a range for your home. Flats in older blocks, such as in Bahadurabad and Gulshan, often need both gel inside and drain treatment for shared stacks.

Frequently asked questions
How long does cockroach gel last?
It depends on the product, heat and dust. In Karachi’s heat it can dry out faster, so technicians check and replace it on the follow-up visit.
Is cockroach gel safe for children?
Gel is placed in small dots inside cracks and hinges, away from surfaces, which keeps exposure low. Keep children from reaching into treated gaps.
How often should cockroach gel treatment be repeated?
Usually a first treatment plus one follow-up, then a general treatment every three to four months. Restaurants usually need monthly service.
Why do I see more cockroaches after gel treatment?
The gel draws them out to feed. This is normal for a few days, and numbers usually fall sharply within one to two weeks.
