Cockroach Control Kitchen: The Ultimate Guide to a Safe Kitchen
By Pest Tech TeamPublished 6 min readCockroaches

Cockroach control kitchen owners can rely on starts with one question: which cockroach do you have? Karachi kitchens host two main species, they live in different places, and they need different treatment. Spraying the same market insecticide at both is why so many kitchens never get clear. This guide explains the difference, how gel, spray and drain treatment fit together, how to keep food safe during treatment, and the habits that make the result last.
German vs American cockroaches: know your enemy
| German cockroach | American cockroach | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Small (about 1.5 cm) | Large (3–4 cm) |
| Colour | Light brown with two dark stripes behind the head | Reddish-brown |
| Where it lives | Inside the kitchen: hinges, cabinets, appliances | Drains, sewers, floor traps, basements |
| When you see it | Day and night in heavy infestations | Mostly at night, near drains |
| Breeding | Very fast; lives and breeds indoors | Slower; breeds in sewers and drains |
| Main treatment | Gel bait plus crack-and-crevice treatment | Drain treatment, sealing, perimeter spray |
Many Karachi homes have both: German cockroaches living in the cabinets, and American cockroaches visiting from the drains at night. Treating one and ignoring the other leaves half the problem.
Cockroach control kitchen methods: gel vs spray
Gel bait
Gel bait is a small dot of insecticide mixed with food attractant, placed where cockroaches hide — cabinet hinges, the back of drawers, behind the fridge, around the sink. Cockroaches eat the gel, return to their hiding places and die there. Other cockroaches then feed on their droppings and bodies, spreading the effect through the colony. This is why gel is the backbone of German cockroach control.
Gel works best when:
- It is placed in many small dots, close to where cockroaches hide.
- No spray is applied on or near it — spray makes gel unattractive.
- Other food sources are removed so the gel is the easiest meal.
Residual spray
Residual spray leaves a thin layer of insecticide on surfaces that kills cockroaches crossing it for some weeks. It is useful for the perimeter of the kitchen, entry points, under sinks and behind appliances — but not directly on food surfaces or on top of gel.
Drain treatment
For American cockroaches coming up from floor traps and drains, a drain treatment with a suitable product and a proper drain cover is far more effective than spraying the kitchen floor. We cover this in detail on our cockroach control service page.

Food safety during treatment
A kitchen is where your family's food is prepared, so safety matters:
- Before treatment, put all open food, spices and utensils inside closed cupboards or the fridge. Cover the stove and counters if asked.
- During treatment, the technician places gel in cracks and hinges — not on surfaces where food is prepared.
- After treatment, wipe counters before cooking, but do not wipe inside hinges or cracks where gel was placed.
- Keep children and pets away from treated areas until your technician says they can return.
Ask your technician for the names of the products used. You can see the types of products we use on our cockroach chemicals page.
Where cockroaches hide in Karachi kitchens
When you inspect your kitchen with a torch, check these spots:
- Cabinet hinges and the corners of cabinet frames.
- Under and behind the sink, especially around pipes.
- Behind and under the fridge, where the motor keeps it warm.
- Inside the microwave and oven frames and around the gas stove.
- Behind the water dispenser or water filter.
- Cracks in tiles and gaps behind the kitchen counter.
- Inside electrical switchboards near the counter.
- Cardboard boxes and paper bags stored in the kitchen.
How quickly will cockroaches disappear?
With gel bait, you will often see more cockroaches for a few days as they come out to feed — this is normal. Numbers usually fall sharply within one to two weeks. Heavy German cockroach infestations may need a follow-up visit to place fresh gel for the next generation hatching from egg cases.
Prevention habits that make it last
Treatment removes the cockroaches you have; habits stop new ones settling in:
- Clean up every night. No dirty dishes in the sink, no crumbs on counters, no food on the stove.
- Keep the sink dry. Cockroaches need water more than food — wipe the sink and fix dripping taps.
- Seal food. Store sugar, flour, rice and snacks in airtight containers.
- Empty bins daily and use a bin with a tight lid.
- Cover floor traps with a proper cover, especially at night.
- Remove cardboard. Grocery boxes often carry German cockroach egg cases — unpack and throw them out quickly.
- Seal cracks around pipes and behind counters with sealant.
- Schedule treatment every three to four months if you have had a problem before.

Mistakes that make kitchen cockroaches worse
We regularly visit kitchens where well-meaning efforts have made the problem harder to solve:
- Spraying market insecticide over gel. The spray contaminates the bait so cockroaches avoid it.
- Bug bombs and foggers. They push cockroaches deeper into walls and neighbouring flats and leave residue on every surface.
- Moving the problem. Emptying infested cabinets into another room carries egg cases with them.
- Stopping too early. Cockroach egg cases hatch over several weeks, so one visit rarely finishes a heavy German cockroach problem.
- Ignoring appliances. Fridges, microwaves and water dispensers are warm, safe homes and must be checked.
If you have already tried several products without success, tell your technician which ones — it helps them choose a product the cockroaches have not become used to.
Restaurants and commercial kitchens
Commercial kitchens have the same two species but much more food, heat and water — and audits to pass. They need monthly treatment, pest logs and careful product choice. If you run a food business, see our restaurant pest control service.

Frequently asked questions
Is cockroach gel safe in a kitchen?
Yes, when it is placed in small dots inside hinges, cracks and gaps where children and pets cannot reach it, and away from food preparation surfaces.
How fast does cockroach treatment work?
You may see more cockroaches for a few days as they come out to feed on the gel. Numbers usually drop sharply within one to two weeks.
Does cockroach treatment leave a smell?
Gel bait has almost no smell. Residual sprays can have a mild smell for a few hours; ventilate the kitchen after treatment.
Why do cockroaches come back after I spray?
Market sprays kill the cockroaches they touch but miss the colony and egg cases hidden in cracks, and they make gel bait less effective. Targeted gel and drain treatment work better.
