Safe Bee Hive Removal: Expert Guide for Karachi Homes
By Pest Tech TeamPublished 6 min readOther Pests

A bee hive (shehad ki makhi ka chatta) on a balcony, water tank, AC unit or tree near the house can make a family afraid to open windows. Many people's first instinct is to burn it with a kerosene-soaked rag on a stick. That is how most serious stings — and many fires — happen. This guide explains safe bee hive removal: how to tell bees from wasps, why you should never burn a hive, how removal and relocation work, and what happens afterwards.
Bees or wasps? Identify first
Bees and wasps look similar from a distance, but they behave differently and need different handling:
| Honeybees | Wasps (bhirr / hornets) | |
|---|---|---|
| Body | Hairy, golden-brown with dark bands | Smooth, shiny, narrow waist; yellow and black or reddish-brown |
| Nest | Wax combs, often hanging in open sheets or inside cavities | Papery nest, or mud cells; smaller |
| Location in Karachi | Under balconies, on water tanks, in trees, inside wall cavities, under AC units | Eaves, window frames, pipes, sheds, garden shrubs |
| Stinging | Stings once and dies; defends the hive strongly | Can sting repeatedly; can be aggressive near the nest |
| Honey | Yes | No |
Honeybees are valuable pollinators, and where possible their colonies are removed or relocated rather than simply destroyed. Wasp nests near living areas are usually treated and removed.
Why you should never burn a hive
Burning a hive is dangerous for several reasons:
- Mass stinging. Disturbing a hive triggers the whole colony to defend it. Hundreds of bees can attack the person holding the flame, and anyone nearby.
- Falls. Many hives are high up; people lose their balance on ladders and roofs while being stung.
- Fire. Burning rags, dripping kerosene and melting wax can set curtains, AC units, wiring and trees on fire.
- It often fails. Surviving bees return to the spot or form a new hive nearby, now more defensive.
The same applies to spraying market insecticide at a large hive from close range, throwing stones, or hitting it with sticks.

What to do when you find a hive
- Keep everyone away — especially children, elderly people and anyone allergic to stings.
- Close nearby windows and doors, and switch off nearby AC units if bees are entering them.
- Keep pets indoors.
- Do not disturb the hive — no stones, water, smoke or spray.
- Take a photo from a safe distance so the size, location and type can be assessed.
- Call for professional help. Our bee and wasp removal service handles hives on homes, offices, schools and factories.
Safe bee hive removal: how professionals do it
Assessment
The team checks the type of insect, the size of the colony, how high it is and what is around it — windows, wires, water tanks, neighbours. Hives inside wall cavities or roof spaces need more work than those hanging in the open.
Timing
Removal is usually done in the evening or at night, when most bees are back in the hive and less active. This reduces the number of flying bees and the risk to neighbours.
Protection
Technicians wear full bee suits, veils and gloves. The area below the hive is cleared, and people nearby are asked to stay indoors with windows closed.
Removal or relocation
- Relocation: Where the colony can be reached safely and a beekeeper can take it, combs and bees are carefully removed and transferred.
- Removal with treatment: Where relocation is not practical — for example a hive inside a wall, near a school entrance or on a hospital building — the colony is treated and then removed.
- Wasp nests are treated with a suitable product and then taken down.
Cleaning up
Wax and honey left behind attract new swarms and other pests like ants and cockroaches. The site is scraped and cleaned, and gaps into cavities are sealed.
After-treatment: stopping them coming back
Bees are attracted to places where a hive has been before, because of the smell of wax and honey. After removal:
- Clean the site thoroughly and remove all comb.
- Seal holes and gaps in walls, roof spaces, AC housings and water tank covers.
- Repair broken tank lids and fit mesh on vents.
- Check the area over the following weeks — scout bees may return. Report early activity before a new colony settles.
Hives in water tanks and AC units
Two locations are especially common in Karachi:
- Water tanks: Bees are attracted to water and to the shade under tank covers. A hive inside or against a drinking water tank needs careful removal and cleaning of the tank afterwards.
- AC outdoor units and ducting: The warm, sheltered space suits bees. The unit may need to be switched off during removal, and then cleaned.
Allergies and stings
Most stings cause pain, redness and swelling. But some people have serious allergic reactions. Seek emergency medical help if someone who has been stung has difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, dizziness, or a widespread rash — or has been stung many times. For a single honeybee sting, scrape the sting out sideways with a fingernail or card rather than squeezing it, wash the area and apply a cold pack.
Schools, offices and factories
Hives on schools, hospitals, offices and factories need extra care because many people pass nearby. The removal is usually scheduled after hours or on a weekend, the area is cordoned off, and staff are told which entrances to avoid. For schools, it is worth checking roofs, water tanks and tall trees before each term, since hives found early are smaller and simpler to remove.
Can we keep the honey?
Honey from a wild hive removed from a building is not recommended for eating unless a beekeeper has handled it. It may be contaminated with dust, debris or any products sprayed nearby by others before the removal.
Estimate and book
Bee and wasp removal is priced by location, height and access, so we quote after seeing photos. For a general home treatment at the same time, the pest control cost calculator gives a range. Hives are especially common in greener areas with large trees, such as DHA Karachi and older parts of PECHS. If ants or cockroaches appear after a hive is removed, see our guide to cheenti ka ilaj.
The National Pesticide Information Center's pest control guidance covers safe decision-making for stinging insects and other pests around the home.

Frequently asked questions
Can we keep the honey from a removed hive?
It is not recommended unless a beekeeper has handled it, because honey from hives on buildings may be contaminated with dust, debris or sprays used by others.
Why is bee hive removal done at night?
Most bees are inside the hive and calmer in the evening and at night, which reduces flying bees and the risk of stings to the team and neighbours.
What should someone allergic to bee stings do?
Stay well away and indoors during removal. If stung and they have breathing difficulty, facial swelling or dizziness, seek emergency medical help immediately.
Will bees come back after the hive is removed?
They can be attracted by leftover wax and honey smell. Thorough cleaning and sealing gaps greatly reduce the chance of a new colony.
