Cheenti Ka Ilaj: Essential Ant Control That Actually Works
By Pest Tech TeamPublished 6 min readOther Pests

Ants (cheenti) are one of the most common household pests in Karachi. One day there is a single ant on the counter; the next there is a long line from the window to the sugar jar. Most people reach for a spray — and a week later the ants are back, sometimes in more places than before. This guide explains cheenti ka ilaj that actually works: the ant types in Karachi homes, why bait beats spray, how to clean trails, and the kitchen habits that keep ants away.
Why ants keep coming back
An ant colony has workers, which you see, and one or more queens, which stay hidden in the nest laying eggs. The workers you see on the counter are a small fraction of the colony. Killing them does not affect the queen, who keeps producing more workers.
Worse, some common ant species respond to stress by budding — the colony splits and moves to several new locations. Spraying a trail can turn one nest into three.
That is why cheenti ka ilaj must reach the nest.
Ant types in Karachi homes
| Ant | Appearance | Where you find it | What it likes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small black ants | Tiny, dark | Kitchens, counters, sugar | Sweet foods, sugar, syrup |
| Pharaoh ants | Tiny, yellowish or light brown | Kitchens, bathrooms, hospitals, flats | Sweet and greasy foods; nests in walls |
| Ghost ants | Tiny, pale legs and abdomen | Kitchens, bathrooms, plant pots | Sweet foods, moisture |
| Carpenter ants | Large, black or reddish | Damp wood, window frames, gardens | Protein and sweets; nest in wood |
| Red ants / fire ants | Reddish, aggressive | Gardens, lawns, cracks outside | Protein; painful sting |
Pharaoh and ghost ants — the tiny, pale ones — are the species most likely to bud when sprayed. They are common in apartment buildings, where they nest inside walls and move between flats.

Cheenti ka ilaj: why bait beats spray
How ant bait works
Ant bait mixes a slow-acting insecticide with food the ants want — sugar-based for sweet-loving ants, protein-based for others. Worker ants eat the bait and carry it back to the nest, where they share it with other workers, larvae and the queen. Because it acts slowly, the bait spreads through the colony before the workers die.
How to use bait correctly
- Place it on the trail, close to where ants are travelling — not in random corners.
- Do not kill the ants feeding on it. You will see more ants at first; this is the bait working.
- Do not spray near the bait. Spray contaminates it and makes ants avoid it.
- Remove competing food so the bait is the best meal available.
- Be patient. Activity usually falls noticeably within several days to two weeks.
- Replace bait if it is eaten or dries out.
When spray has a role
A professional may use a non-repellent residual product around the outside of the home or at entry points, which ants cannot detect and carry back to the nest. Market sprays are different: they are repellent and kill on contact, which triggers budding.
Cleaning ant trails
Ants leave a chemical trail that other ants follow. After bait has done its work — or if ants are wandering where you do not want bait — clean the trail:
- Wipe with warm soapy water or a vinegar-and-water mix to remove the scent.
- Clean along skirting, window sills and counter edges where trails run.
- Do not wipe away bait placements during treatment.
Kitchen tips that keep ants away
- Store sugar, honey, jam, biscuits and cereals in airtight containers.
- Wipe counters and the stove every night — even small sugar spills attract ants.
- Rinse sweet drink bottles and cans before putting them in the bin.
- Keep pet food bowls clean and do not leave food out overnight.
- Fix leaking taps and pipes; many ants also need moisture.
- Empty the kitchen bin daily and keep a tight lid on it.
- Place the sugar container in a shallow dish of water only as a short-term fix — it does not solve the colony.
Sealing entry points
Find where the trail enters: a window frame, a crack in the wall, a gap around a pipe, an electrical socket. Once the colony has been treated, seal these gaps with sealant or filler. In flats, ants often arrive through shared walls and shafts, so sealing inside your own flat helps even if the nest is next door.
Garden ants and red ants
Red ants and fire ants in gardens and lawns can give painful stings, especially to children. For these, granular baits spread near mounds or professional treatment of the nests work better than pouring water or kerosene into the mound — a dangerous practice that also damages the soil.
Chalk lines and other home remedies
Many families draw chalk lines or sprinkle turmeric, cinnamon or salt to block ants. These can disturb a trail briefly, because ants lose the scent where the line crosses it, but they do not affect the colony. Ants simply find another route. They are fine as a temporary measure while bait works, but they are not treatment.
When to call a professional
Call for help when:
- Ants keep returning after you have used bait properly.
- You have tiny pale ants in several rooms, suggesting a nest inside walls.
- Ants are in electrical sockets or equipment.
- You see large ants in damp wood — possibly carpenter ants.
- You have red ants stinging in the garden.
Our ant control service identifies the species, finds the nests and uses the right bait and non-repellent treatment. Ants are also covered in our general home treatment, described in the Karachi pest control guide. If ants and cockroaches share your kitchen, see our guide to cockroach control in the kitchen.
Estimate your cost
For a first idea of cost, try our pest control cost calculator. Families in older apartment blocks in Federal B Area and Gulshan often deal with Pharaoh ants moving between flats, where coordinated treatment works best.
The National Pesticide Information Center has an independent guide to ant control, including baits, which explains why baits are often the most effective choice.
Talk to Pest Tech
Send us a close-up photo of the ants and tell us where the trail goes on WhatsApp. We will identify the species and recommend treatment. Pest Tech has provided ant and general pest control in Karachi since 2005, and every treatment comes with a written guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Do chalk lines stop ants?
Only briefly. Chalk disturbs the scent trail, so ants may avoid the line for a while, but the colony is untouched and ants soon find another route.
How do I get rid of sugar ants in the kitchen?
Use a sweet ant bait on the trail, stop spraying, remove other sugary food and wait while workers carry the bait to the nest. Then clean the trail and seal the entry point.
Why do ants come back after I spray?
Spraying kills visible workers but not the queen, and some species split into several new nests when stressed. Bait that reaches the nest works far better.
Is ant bait safe with children in the house?
Use bait in closed stations or place gel in cracks out of reach of children and pets, following the label. Professional placements are designed for this.
