Chipkali Ka Ilaj: Proven Ways to Keep Lizards Out Safely
By Pest Tech TeamPublished 6 min readOther Pests

House lizards (chipkali) are harmless to people in most cases, but many families in Karachi find them unpleasant — especially in kitchens and bedrooms. Some people fear them, others worry about hygiene, and nearly everyone has heard a home remedy that is supposed to keep them away. This guide explains chipkali ka ilaj in a practical way: why lizards come indoors, how lights and insects attract them, sealing and cleaning steps, what professional treatment involves, and the myths to ignore.
Why lizards come indoors
The common house lizard (house gecko) eats insects: moths, flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches, ants and small spiders. Lizards come indoors for three reasons:
- Food — insects gathering around lights, kitchens and bins.
- Shelter — warm, dark gaps behind furniture, frames, AC units and cupboards.
- Water — in bathrooms, kitchens and around AC drip pipes.
A home with lots of insects will attract lizards no matter what else you do. That is why chipkali ka ilaj always starts with the insects.
Lights: the lizard magnet
In Karachi, the most common place to see a lizard is on the wall next to a light — especially outdoor lights, balcony lights and tube lights near windows. Insects are drawn to the light in the evening, and lizards wait nearby to catch them.
To reduce this:
- Switch off unnecessary outdoor and balcony lights in the evening.
- Use warm-coloured or yellow bulbs outdoors; they attract fewer insects than bright white light.
- Move lights away from doors and windows where possible, so insects gather away from entry points.
- Draw curtains at night so indoor light does not draw insects to windows.
Lizard Control
Lizard control in Karachi that removes what draws chipkali indoors — insects, gaps and lighting — with safe treatment for homes and shops. Book Pest Tech.
Chipkali ka ilaj step 1: cut the insect supply
- Fit fine mesh on windows and ventilators to keep flying insects out.
- Control cockroaches in the kitchen — see our guide to cockroach control in the kitchen.
- Remove standing water to reduce mosquitoes.
- Keep bins covered and empty them daily to reduce flies.
- Clean up crumbs and food spills that attract ants.
When the insect population drops, lizards have much less reason to stay.
Step 2: seal the entry points
Lizards squeeze through surprisingly small gaps. Check and seal:
| Entry point | Fix |
|---|---|
| Gaps under doors | Door sweeps or rubber strips |
| Gaps around window frames | Sealant or silicone |
| Holes around AC pipes and cables | Fill with sealant or cement |
| Open ventilators and exhaust fans | Fine mesh covers |
| Cracks in walls | Fill and repaint |
| Gaps behind kitchen cabinets | Seal the edges |
Step 3: remove hiding places
- Move furniture slightly away from walls so there are fewer dark gaps.
- Clear clutter behind cupboards, fridges and in store rooms.
- Check behind wall hangings, calendars and photo frames — a common lizard hiding spot.
- Keep AC outdoor units and their surroundings clean.
Professional lizard treatment
Our lizard control service combines:
- Inspection of hiding spots, entry points and insect sources.
- Targeted treatment of hiding places — behind frames, cabinets and AC units — with products used per label.
- Insect control to remove the food supply, often combined with a general pest treatment.
- Advice on sealing and lighting for lasting results.
Lizard treatment is most effective when combined with a general pest control treatment, which is why many families book both at once. Our Karachi pest control guide explains how general treatments are planned.
Myths that do not work
We hear these remedies every week. None of them has a reliable effect:
- Eggshells hung on walls or placed in corners. Lizards are not afraid of them.
- Peacock feathers. No evidence they repel lizards.
- Naphthalene balls (moth balls) in cupboards. They smell strong but do not keep lizards away reliably — and they should never be used where children or pets can reach them.
- Onion or garlic slices on walls. At best a temporary smell.
- Pepper spray homemade mixtures sprayed on walls. Unpleasant for people and can irritate eyes and skin.
- Cold water sprayed on lizards. It may make them fall or run away, but it does nothing for the next one.
The methods that work are less exciting: fewer insects, fewer gaps, fewer hiding places.
Lizard eggs
Lizards lay small, hard white eggs, usually in pairs, in hidden gaps — behind cupboards, frames and in cracks. If you find them, remove them with gloves or a tissue and dispose of them, then clean the area. Finding eggs is a sign lizards are living inside, not just visiting — check for gaps and hiding places nearby.
Is lizard poison safe?
We do not recommend putting out poison for lizards at home. It is risky for children and pets, and a poisoned lizard may die inside a wall or cupboard. Professional treatment of hiding places, together with insect control and sealing, is safer and more effective.
Are house lizards dangerous?
The common house lizard is not venomous and does not attack people. Most families simply dislike seeing them. The main concerns are hygiene — droppings on counters and food — and the fear they cause, especially for children. There is no need to panic or to use harsh chemicals; a calm, practical approach works.
Which rooms need the most attention?
| Room | Why lizards come | What to fix |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen | Insects around food, bins and lights | Cockroach control, covered bins, clean counters at night |
| Balcony | Outdoor light and flying insects | Turn off or change light; mesh on doors |
| Bathroom | Water and moths near exhaust fans | Mesh on exhaust; fix leaks |
| Bedroom | Light near windows; gaps behind furniture | Curtains at night; move furniture from walls |
| Store room | Clutter and undisturbed hiding spots | Clear and organise; check for eggs |
Hygiene notes
Lizard droppings — small dark pellets with a white tip — should be cleaned up with gloves and disinfectant. Keep food covered, especially at night, and wash any utensils left out in the open before use.

Use our pest control cost calculator for a range for a general treatment that includes lizards and the insects that attract them. Families in greener areas with lots of outdoor lighting, such as PECHS, often combine lizard control with mosquito control.
The National Pesticide Information Center's pest control starting guide stresses identifying the pest and removing food, water and shelter first — exactly the approach that works for lizards.

Frequently asked questions
What should I do with lizard eggs (anday)?
Remove them with gloves or a tissue, dispose of them and clean the area. Then look for gaps and hiding places nearby, because eggs mean lizards are living indoors.
Is lizard poison safe to use at home?
We do not recommend it. It is risky for children and pets, and poisoned lizards may die in walls. Insect control, sealing and targeted professional treatment are safer.
Do eggshells keep lizards away?
No. It is a common myth with no reliable effect. Reducing insects, sealing gaps and removing hiding places are what work.
Why do lizards gather near lights?
Insects are attracted to light in the evening, and lizards wait near lights to catch them. Switching off or changing outdoor lights reduces both.
