Deemak ka ilaj is one of the most searched pest problems in Karachi — and one of the most misunderstood. This guide explains, in simple English with the Roman Urdu terms you already know, what deemak is, how to check your home, what gharelu tareeqay can and cannot do, and when you need professional help.

Deemak kya hai? (What are termites?)

Deemak (termites) are small, pale insects that live in large colonies and feed on cellulose — the material in wood, paper, cardboard and even some fabrics. In Karachi most damage comes from subterranean termites, which live in the soil and travel up into buildings through cracks, joints and pipes. Drywood termites live inside dry wood itself, such as furniture and window frames.

A colony can have many thousands of workers, and they work quietly for months before anyone notices. That is why damage is often found late — during painting, a wardrobe move or a renovation.

Deemak ki nishaniyan (Signs of termites)

Walk through your home with a torch and a screwdriver handle and check for:

  • Mitti ki nali (mud tubes): pencil-width tunnels of soil on walls, pillars, skirting or behind cupboards.
  • Khokhli lakri (hollow wood): door frames, cupboard backs or window frames that sound hollow when tapped, or crumble at floor level.
  • Phoola hua paint: bubbling or blistered paint on walls with no plumbing behind them.
  • Par (wings): piles of small wings near windows and lights, especially from May to July.
  • Mitti in cracks: soil packed into floor cracks or at the base of walls.
What you seeWhat it usually means
Mud tubes on wallsSubterranean termites coming up from soil
Hollow door frame at floor levelTermites feeding inside the frame
Fine powder and round holesUsually wood borer (ghun), not deemak
Wings on window sillsA swarm; a colony is nearby

If you see round holes with fine powder, it is probably wood borer — a different pest with a different treatment. See wood borer treatment.

Deemak ka ilaj: gharelu tareeqay aur unki had (home remedies and their limits)

Many families try home remedies first. Some help a little; none reach the colony.

Gharelu tareeqaDoes it help?
Putting furniture in the sunCan kill termites inside small, dry items; does not stop new ones arriving
Neem oil or clove oilMay repel on contact; not a long-term treatment
Breaking mud tubesShows whether termites are active (they rebuild within days); does not treat them
Removing damp wood and cardboardHelpful — removes food and moisture
Fixing leaksVery helpful — termites need moisture
Market sprays on the wallKill a few workers; colony continues underground

The honest answer: home remedies are useful for prevention and for checking activity, but they cannot treat an established colony living in the soil under your floor.

Professional drilling: how the real treatment works

For an existing house or flat, the standard deemak ka ilaj is a drill-fill-seal soil barrier:

  1. The technician finds where termites are entering and marks a drilling line along the inside of walls and wall-floor joints.
  2. Small holes are drilled roughly every two feet.
  3. A termiticide solution is injected into the soil below — the dose follows the product label.
  4. Holes are sealed and finished.
  5. Affected woodwork — door frames, cupboards — is treated separately by injection or surface treatment.

The products used are non-repellent termiticides such as fipronil or imidacloprid, applied per label. Termites cannot sense them, so they pass through the treated zone and carry the active ingredient back to the colony. You can read more on the chemicals we use for termite treatment and our full termite control service.

For a new building, pre-construction termite treatment is cheaper per square foot and more complete. To estimate the cost for your area, use the termite treatment cost calculator.

Ghar ke kin hisson mein deemak zyada hoti hai? (Where termites strike most)

In Karachi homes, our technicians find deemak most often in these places:

  • Kitchen cabinets — especially under the sink, where pipes leak and wood stays damp.
  • Door frames — the bottom of the frame touches the floor, giving termites a direct route from the soil.
  • Built-in wardrobes — they sit against walls, so termites can work behind them for months unseen.
  • Wooden flooring and skirting — common in DHA and Clifton houses.
  • Store rooms — cardboard boxes, old newspapers and stored furniture are easy food.
  • Bathrooms — wooden doors and frames next to wet walls.

Check these spots every few months, and especially after the monsoon.

Treatment ke baad kya karein? (After treatment)

The work does not end when the technician leaves. To get the full benefit of deemak ka ilaj:

  1. Floor ko dhoyein nahi — avoid washing the drilled line with heavy water for the first few days, so the sealing sets properly.
  2. Mud tubes todein — break old mud tubes after treatment. If new ones appear after two to three weeks, send a photo to your technician.
  3. Lakri ki marammat — repair or replace badly damaged wood only after activity has stopped, otherwise new wood can be attacked too.
  4. Warranty card sambhal kar rakhein — keep the warranty certificate safe; it records the date, area treated and product used.
  5. Naye furniture ka dhyan — check any second-hand furniture before bringing it into the house.

Deemak aur ghar bechna ya kiraye par dena

If you are selling, buying or renting a house, a termite inspection is worth doing first. Hidden damage in door frames and wardrobes is expensive to repair after you move in, and a recent treatment certificate is a useful document for both sides.

Bachao: preventing deemak (prevention)

  • Planters aur garden beds ko deewar se door rakhein — keep planters away from walls.
  • Leak theek karwayein — fix leaks near foundations and tanks.
  • Lakri aur gatta deewar ke saath na rakhein — do not store wood or cardboard against walls.
  • Saal mein ek dafa inspection — get an annual inspection before swarming season.
  • Naye ghar mein pre-construction treatment — treat the soil while building.

Frequently asked questions

Kya deemak khud khatam ho jati hai? (Do termites go away on their own?)

No. A termite colony keeps growing as long as it has food and moisture. Breaking mud tubes or spraying surfaces does not remove the colony in the soil.

Deemak ke ilaj mein kitne din lagte hain? (How long does treatment take?)

Drilling and injection for a typical house takes one to two days. Termite activity usually stops within a few weeks as the colony is affected.

Kya deemak ki dawai ghar walon ke liye safe hai? (Is the termite chemical safe for the family?)

The termiticide is injected into the soil under the floor and sealed in, away from living areas. Keep children and pets away from the drilling line until your technician confirms it is dry.

Is it deemak or ghun in my furniture?

Mud tubes and soil mean deemak (termites). Neat round holes with fine powder mean ghun (wood borer). The treatments are different.
