Flies are one of the most visible pests in a food business. Customers notice them immediately, food safety inspectors write them up, and they carry germs from waste and drains to food and surfaces. Good flies control for restaurants and shops is not about spraying more — it is about finding where flies breed and stopping them there. This guide covers house flies and drain flies, waste management, fly lights and professional treatment.

House flies vs drain flies

Two main types of fly cause problems in food businesses. They breed in different places and need different control:

House flyDrain fly (moth fly)
AppearanceGrey, about 6–7 mm, four dark stripes on the backSmall, fuzzy, moth-like, holds wings like a roof
Where it breedsRotting food, rubbish, animal waste, wet organic matterThe slimy film inside drains, grease traps and wet floor gaps
Where you see itAround bins, food, doors and windowsNear sinks, drains, washrooms; resting on walls
FlightStrong, fastWeak, short hops
Main controlWaste management, screens, fly lights, targeted treatmentMechanical drain cleaning plus drain treatment

In Karachi, both are worst in the warm months and during the monsoon, when waste stays wet and drains overflow.

Flies control for restaurants: waste management first

A single bin of food waste left in the heat can produce a large number of new flies within days. For restaurants, bakeries, food stalls and grocery shops:

  1. Empty bins at least daily — more often in summer and the monsoon.
  2. Use bins with tight-fitting lids, and keep them closed.
  3. Line bins and tie bags before removing them.
  4. Wash bins and the bin area regularly with water and detergent; remove spilled waste and liquid.
  5. Keep the waste area away from doors, and as far from food preparation as possible.
  6. Arrange frequent collection with your waste contractor or building.
  7. Do not store waste outside overnight in open sacks.

Drain flies: clean the drain, not the air

Drain flies breed in the organic film lining drains. Spraying the adults you see does nothing to the larvae in the drain. Effective control:

  • Scrub drains with a stiff brush to remove the film.
  • Clean grease traps on schedule — overflowing grease traps are a major breeding source.
  • Treat drains with a suitable product after cleaning, as part of professional service.
  • Repair broken tiles and floor gaps where water and food collect.
  • Keep floor traps covered.

Our guide to cockroaches from drains explains why drains matter for more than one pest.

Screens, doors and air curtains

  • Fit insect mesh on windows and ventilators in kitchens and stores.
  • Keep back doors closed — deliveries should not leave a door open for long.
  • Use strip curtains or air curtains on busy doors.
  • Self-closing doors on kitchens and washrooms help.
  • Seal gaps around AC pipes and exhaust ducts.

Fly lights (insect light traps)

Fly lights — sometimes called fly killer machines — attract flies with UV light. There are two types:

  • Glue board units catch flies on a sticky board. They are preferred in food areas because insects are held on the board.
  • Electric grid (zapper) units kill flies with an electric grid. They can scatter insect fragments, so they should not be placed over food or preparation areas.

Placement matters:

  • Install lights near entry points, where flies come in, not over food or counters.
  • Keep them away from windows, where they compete with daylight and attract insects from outside.
  • Mount them at the height recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Change UV tubes on schedule — their attraction fades long before they stop glowing.
  • Replace glue boards regularly and record the catch; it shows where flies are coming from.

Professional flies treatment

Our flies control service combines:

  1. Inspection of waste areas, drains, doors and nearby sources.
  2. Drain treatment for drain flies.
  3. Targeted residual treatment of fly resting areas — walls near bins, ceilings, door frames.
  4. Bait for flies in waste areas where appropriate.
  5. Fly light advice and monitoring.
  6. A written report for your audit file.

For restaurants, flies control is usually part of a monthly contract; see our restaurant pest control service and our restaurant pest control checklist.

Shops, markets and meat outlets

Grocery shops, fruit and vegetable stalls, and meat and fish outlets face the heaviest fly pressure. Practical steps:

  • Cover produce and meat displays where possible.
  • Remove damaged fruit and vegetables daily.
  • Wash floors at closing and let them dry.
  • Keep drains and cutting areas clean.
  • Coordinate with neighbouring shops — flies from a neighbour's waste will visit you.
  • Ask the market association to arrange regular waste pickup and drain cleaning for the whole lane, since shared problems need shared solutions.

A daily fly checklist for staff

Put this on the kitchen wall and make one person responsible for each shift:

TimeTask
OpeningCheck fly light glue boards; note the catch; close back doors
During serviceKeep bins closed; clear plates and food waste promptly
After lunch rushEmpty kitchen bins; wipe spills on floors and counters
ClosingEmpty all bins; wash the bin area; scrub floor drains; dry floors
WeeklyScrub drains with a brush; clean grease trap as scheduled; wash bins
MonthlyProfessional service and report; change UV tubes when due

Staff habits make the biggest difference between visits. A restaurant that removes waste promptly and keeps drains clean needs far less treatment than one that relies on spraying.

Seasons: when flies peak

In Karachi, flies build up in the hot months and peak during the monsoon, when waste stays wet and drains overflow. Increase waste collection and cleaning from June, and schedule an extra treatment before and during the monsoon. Our monsoon pest control checklist covers the wider preparation.

Estimate your cost

For restaurants and shops, flies control is usually priced as part of an annual contract. Use the commercial fumigation AMC estimator for a first range. Businesses around busy markets in Saddar often need more frequent visits.

The National Pesticide Information Center has an independent guide to fly identification and control, which also stresses finding and removing breeding sites first.

Frequently asked questions

Do fly killer machines work?

Yes, as part of a programme. Glue-board fly lights placed near entry points and serviced regularly catch many flies, but they do not remove breeding sources.

Why do small flies keep coming from the drains?

Drain flies breed in the slimy film inside drains and grease traps. Scrubbing the drain and treating it stops them; spraying the adults does not.

When is fly season in Karachi?

Flies build up in the hot months and peak in the monsoon, when waste stays wet and drains overflow. Increase cleaning and treatment from June.

Can flies be controlled without spraying in food areas?

Largely, yes. Waste management, drain cleaning, screens, air curtains and glue-board fly lights do most of the work; targeted treatment is used away from food.
