Pest control companies, housing societies, factories and municipal teams in Pakistan often ask us which fogger to buy. There is no single best fogging machine for pest control — each type is designed for a different job, and each has a different maintenance burden. This honest comparison explains the three main types, where each works best, what they cost you in upkeep and what to check before buying in Pakistan.

The three machine types

Thermal foggers

A thermal fogger uses a pulse-jet engine to heat a carrier liquid mixed with insecticide, producing a dense, visible fog of very fine droplets. Common pulse-jet types include Igeba, Pulsfog and Swingfog-style machines, as well as smaller handheld butane foggers.

ULV (cold) foggers

Ultra-low-volume machines use an electric motor or small engine to produce a fine mist without heat. The droplet size is controlled by the nozzle and flow setting. Mains, battery and engine-driven versions exist.

Motorised mist blowers

A 2-stroke engine drives a fan that blows a strong air stream; liquid is fed into it and broken into fine droplets. Mist blowers can be set for larger droplets (for residual coverage of walls and foliage) or finer ones.

Spray Machine & Fogger Repair

Use cases

  • Housing society or colony mosquito control: thermal foggers for lanes, drains and parks in the evening, combined with residual spraying and larviciding.
  • Offices, warehouses, factories and halls: ULV foggers when the space is empty; they reach every corner with little residue.
  • Schools and hospitals: ULV indoors outside working hours; mist blowers or knapsack sprayers for residual treatment of grounds.
  • Farms, nurseries and orchards: mist blowers for canopy coverage.
  • Small homes and gardens: often a knapsack sprayer and source reduction do more than any fogger.

Remember that fogging kills only the mosquitoes flying at the time. Our guide to mosquito fogging vs spraying explains how to combine methods.

Carrier liquids

Thermal foggers traditionally use an oil-based carrier such as diesel or kerosene, which produces the dense visible fog, and some models and formulations use water-based carriers with special additives. The carrier must match both the machine's nozzle set and the product label. Oil carriers leave an oily film and a smell, and increase fire risk; follow the label and the manufacturer's instructions strictly. ULV machines use specific ULV formulations or diluted products as the label allows.

Maintenance burden: the hidden cost

Buying price is only part of the story. Before choosing a machine, consider:

  • Thermal foggers need regular decarbonising, carburettor membranes, spark plugs, batteries and careful cleaning. Poorly maintained machines drip, flame or fail to start. See our guide to a thermal fogger not starting.
  • Mist blowers need correct 2-stroke fuel mix, air filter care, spark plugs and carburettor cleaning. See our mist blower repair guide.
  • ULV machines need nozzle cleaning, motor care and battery maintenance, but generally less.

Buying tips for Pakistan

  1. Parts availability. Choose a model whose spark plugs, membranes, nozzles and seals are available locally or through a reliable supplier.
  2. Service support. Find out who will repair it — a cheap machine with no support can be out of action for weeks in the dengue season.
  3. Manuals. Make sure you get a manual in a language your team can read, with the correct fuel and carrier instructions.
  4. Nozzle sets. Check which dosage nozzles are included for the products you use.
  5. Weight and ergonomics. Operators may carry the machine for hours; test the harness.
  6. Safety features. Solution cut-off valves and heat shields matter.
  7. Training. Budget for training operators on safe use, re-entry times and label compliance.
  8. Beware of copies that look like a known brand but use lower-quality parts.

Operator safety

Whichever machine you choose, operators need protection. Provide gloves, eye protection and a suitable respirator for the product being used, hearing protection for loud thermal foggers and mist blowers, and long-sleeved clothing. Operators should never eat, drink or smoke while fogging, should wash after each shift, and should know the product label's safety instructions and re-entry times. A short written procedure for each machine — start, fog, shut down, clean — prevents most accidents and helps new staff learn quickly.

Which size?

Larger tanks mean fewer refills but more weight. For teams working in lanes and parks, a mid-size thermal fogger is usually easier to carry for long periods than the largest models. For indoor ULV work, battery or mains units sized to the rooms you treat are more practical than large engine-driven units. Ask your supplier for the output rate and treatment area per tank, and match it to your typical job.

Service and repair

Whatever you buy, plan for a pre-season service before the monsoon and dengue season. Our spray machine and fogger repair service repairs thermal foggers, ULV machines and mist blowers of common types, and offers free first diagnosis on WhatsApp.

If you just need the job done

Many organisations find that hiring a professional service is simpler than owning and maintaining foggers. Our mosquito control service brings trained operators, maintained machines and the right products, and combines fogging with residual spraying and larviciding. For a first estimate, try the pest control cost calculator.

The World Health Organization's dengue fact sheet emphasises vector control through managing breeding sites alongside other measures — a useful reminder that no machine alone solves a mosquito problem.

Frequently asked questions

Can a thermal fogger be used indoors?

Generally not in homes, because of dense smoke and fire risk. ULV cold foggers are the better choice for indoor spaces, used when the space is empty.

Should I use kerosene or diesel as a fogging carrier?

Use only the carrier stated for your machine and on the insecticide label. Oil carriers produce dense fog but add smell, residue and fire risk.

What size fogger should I buy?

Match the output rate and tank size to your typical job and to how long operators must carry it. Mid-size machines are often more practical than the largest models.

Which fogger needs the least maintenance?

ULV cold foggers usually need less than thermal foggers or 2-stroke mist blowers, but all machines need regular cleaning and a pre-season service.
